Katie Arkema, LMFT
Thanks to an agreement with Plains Area Mental Health, Floyd Valley Clinics in Le Mars is able to offer behavioral health services conveniently in the clinic. Previously, patients would need to make an additional appointment to seek those services at area agencies. With a therapist onsite, every effort is made to see that patient while they are still at the clinic if that service is warranted.

Katie Arkema, LMFT is the therapist is available for appointments all day on Monday and Tuesday and Friday mornings. Katie had 2 years of experience in Des Moines before joining the Plains Area Mental Health staff in 2011. She began seeing patients at Floyd Valley Clinics in August. You may schedule an appointment with Katie by calling 546-3640.

Katie says what she enjoys most about therapy is helping people find their own strength, making life better and easier for them. Seeing all the positive changes is gratifying. She also said providing therapy services in a medical clinic setting allows for more collaboration with a patient's family provider; she has seen the benefits of treating the whole patient both physically and mentally. Katie has already seen a number of patients with anxiety and the ability to talk with them on-the-spot with a direct referral has been extremely beneficial for those patients.

Though initial referrals were pediatric patients dealing with ADHD and food aversions through the pediatric feeding clinic, Katie is able to work with patients of all ages and issues. Once the initial evaluation is complete, she is also able to provide patients with other local resources if circumstances warrant additional treatment.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month
There are 1.4 million Americans diagnosed each year with diabetes. The latest statistics from the American Diabetes Association showed that 86 million Americans age 20 and older had prediabetes, up from 79 million in 2010.
Before developing type 2 diabetesa condition characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body's inability to use insulin efficiently. Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young people., people almost always have prediabetes. This conditiona condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but are not high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. People with prediabetes are at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and for heart disease and stroke. Other names for prediabetes are impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glucose.X is determined by blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Those with prediabetes are at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseasedisease of the heart and blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries)..
There are no clear symptoms of prediabetes, so you may have it and not know it, while others may have some symptoms of diabetes leading to their diagnosis. Making sure you know your numbers (glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure) and discussing them with your primary care provider is an important step in your healthcare.
If you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, you should work closely with your healthcare provider and have your numbers checked each year. Not everyone that is prediabetic will automatically develop diabetes. Research shows that there are many lifestyle changes that can help return your glucose level to the normal range including a healthy diet, exercise and losing weight. Floyd Valley Clinics has a Clinical Health Coach to help you on this journey. Please call 546-8111 x2208 to set an appointment for Monday - Friday.
