Orthopaedic Services Expanded
Drs. Doarn, Strittholt and Althaus
To complement the orthopaedic services, Floyd Valley Healthcare has entered into a new relationship with Tri-State Specialists located in Sioux City.  Beginning in October, Dr. Aaron Althaus and Dr. Michael Doarn will join our own Dr. Jay Strittholt in offering broader and more collaborative care in orthopaedics.

Dr. Althaus is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon associated with Tri-State Specialists.  He is a Sioux City native and a graduate of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.

He completed a fellowship with the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City where he learned state of the art techniques for the management of injuries and arthritic conditions involving the hip, knee, and shoulder.  During his fellowship he received additional training in shoulder reconstruction, rotator cuff, and labral surgery as well as hip arthroscopy for the treatment of labral tears and hip impingement.

While in residency at the University of Kansas Hospital, Dr. Althaus was able to acquire a broad knowledge of the surgical and non-surgical management of many orthopedic conditions. This is demonstrated by his performance on standardized exams during training including scoring in the 99th percentile on the Orthopedic In-Training Exam and the 96th percentile on the written portion of the orthopedic board exam.

Dr. Doarn is a board-eligible orthopaedic surgeon who has a passion for hand and upper extremity care. He practices full time with Tri-State Specialists.  Dr. Doarn graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his residency with the University of South Florida Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Residency and fellowship at Rush University Hand, Upper Extremity, and Microsurgery.

An Ohio native, Dr. Doarn has trained in the midwest and the southeast. His procedural specialties include:
  • Nerve decompression and repair
  • Upper extremity fracture repair including hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, upper arm, and shoulder
  • Ligament and tendon surgery
  • Arthritis care
  • Arthroscopic surgery
  • Dupuytren's contracture care
Well versed and published in orthopaedics, Dr. Doarn is dedicated to educating his patients while providing the best care possible with the goal of getting them back to work and life. Dr. Doarn serves with Dr. Althaus in providing consultant medical care for the Sioux City Bandits football team.
Director of Patient Care Announced

Loretta Myers, MS, RN, retired on September 30th after serving as Director of Patient Care since July of 1993. Loretta was responsible for managing the Nursing Departments in Surgery, Oncology, Emergency, Education and Quality / Utilization Review and providing oversight to
Community Health, Cardio-Pulmonary and the Laboratory.

Loretta has seen many changes in her 23 years at Floyd Valley. Three significant changes which stand out the most were moving to the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), the patient's length of stay and the construction projects such as the Emergency Department, remodeling of the patient and OB rooms and the North Addition. "It's been very exciting to watch and be a part of all the changes that have taken place in our hospital," states Myers.
Loretta is married to Lyle and is the mother of 3 children and 7
grandchildren. Loretta is very active in civic organizations and is looking forward to spending more time with their grandchildren in retirement.

Lorrie Mortensen, RN, BS, MSN, MBA, began her nearly
40-year nursing career with Floyd Valley Hospital as a staff nurse. She then spent three years with Medical Associates and returned to FVH as a nursing supervisor.  Lorrie and her family relocated to Ketchikan, Alaska where she was VP of Patient Care and Risk Manager. Lorrie then served as the chief nursing officer in a number of facilities across the U.S., most recently as the Chief of Patient Care Services in Slayton, Minnesota.
Lorrie is looking forward to coming back home.  Both she and her late husband, Ron, grew up in Le Mars and have many family members still in the area. Lorrie has three boys (Ryan in Des Moines, Aaron and Jessica in Sioux Falls and Tyler and Rena in Alaska) and is also a proud grandmother to Isaiah. In addition to traveling to see her boys and family, she also enjoys gardening, reading and walking.
Flu Shots Available
Floyd Valley Healthcare will be offering flu shots.  The CDC announced that studies showed the flu mist has not been effective, therefore it will not be available this year.  The vaccine will cover 2 strains of influenza A and 2 strains of influenza B.

All people 6 months of age and older should get flu vaccine.  Vaccination is especially important for people at a higher risk of severe influenza and their close contacts, including healthcare personnel and close contacts of children younger than 6 months.  People who should not be vaccinated include:
  • People who have had a life-threatening reaction to an influenza vaccination in the past.
  • People who have had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) within 6 weeks of getting an influenza vaccine previously.
  • Children less than 6 months of age.
  • People who are moderately or severely ill should wait until they recover before getting immunized.
You may get a flu shot during regular clinic hours at the Floyd Valley Clinics (Le Mars, Marcus and Remsen).  While walk-ins are accepted, making an appointment is encouraged to avoid long wait times.  Additionally, there will be a flu clinic at the Le Mars Clinic on October 19 from 3 - 8 p.m. and Remsen Clinic on October 26 from 2 - 7 p.m.  For more information, please call your provider directly or (712) 546-8113.

Floyd Valley Community Health is also providing clinics throughout the county.  Cost for the influenza vaccine is $25.00.  If you are eligible for Medicare, please bring your Medicare card (Part B) or Medicare Advantage card with you.
