Help with Addictions
Dr. David Wolff

More and more stories are reaching the public about the rising crisis of the misuse of drugs in our country.  With the addition of Dr. David Wolff to the medical staff in July, Floyd Valley Clinics is now able to offer additional services in Addiction Medicine.   Dr. Wolff is one of only eight physicians certified American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) in the state of Iowa and the only physician west of the Des Moines area.   He has held his certification since 2009 and remains current in his field.

Addiction specialists are concerned with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and recovery of persons with the disease of addiction, of those with substance-related health conditions and of people who show unhealthy use of substances including nicotine, alcohol, prescription medications and other licit and illicit drugs. Physicians in this subspecialty also help family members whose health and functioning are affected by a loved one's substance use or addiction.

Family physicians working in addiction medicine have had special training focusing on the prevention and treatment of such diseases. Board certification is the highest level of recognition given to physicians in Addiction Medicine. It indicates that a physician has met the clinical and educational criteria to be eligible to sit for a rigorous six-hour written examination and has successfully passed the examination.  Certification is renewed annually as the physician continues to participate in CME courses and self-assessment activities.  Dr. Wolff must also periodically retake an examination to document that his knowledge and skills are up-to-date.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month -  Are You Prepared?

You cannot turn on the television lately without hearing a story about the devastation left after a natural disaster.  The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey was severe and its effect will cripple that region for the unforeseen future.  We all know a disaster can happen anywhere, but are you really prepared?

Thankfully, there are a number of agencies that have compiled lists that we can follow to make sure you are prepared!  Make a plan for yourself and your family:

  • Make an emergency plan.
  • Sign up for alerts and warnings in your area.
  • Research your evacuation zone, create an evacuation plan and make sure everyone in the family knows it including a meeting place away from your home.
  • Build your own preparedness kit.

It may seem like a daunting task, but those in Emergency Preparedness have made this easier with a program called 20 Weeks to Emergency Preparedness.  It breaks down tasks and purchases to a smaller weekly project instead of trying to tackle all at once.  Now it is time for you to take the first step in becoming prepared!

An Evening in the Garden Party!

Adding landscaping in the south courtyard area is a goal of the FVH Foundation.  This will not only enhance the courtyard featuring 'Activities,' the mural painted last year by local artist Harry Gray, but create a "healing" environment for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy.

For those that need to seek a retreat or to find comfort, the courtyard will provide natural beauty in their time of need.  The tentative plans include many beautiful flowering plants, bushes, ornamental grasses, shade trees, benches for sitting, a water feature and hard surface walkway to stroll along.

In addition to accepting private donations, The Foundation is hosting "An Evening in the Garden Party!" with proceeds being used for the project.  The evening of "friendraising" will be held on Saturday, November 11 beginning at 6 p.m. in the upper level of the Le Mars Convention Center.

The evening will include wine and craft beer tasting, heavy gourmet appetizers and dessert bar and entertainment by the "River Rats Dueling Pianos."  Tables for eight will be available first and can be reserved for $400.  Closer to event, individual tickets may be purchased for standing room only for $45.  For more information about the project or to reserve your table for the event, please email Amy Harnack or call her at (712) 546-3348 or purchasing online at floydvalley.org.
