Safe to Drive
As family members age or face illness, there may be a question about their driving skill. Most adults link their independence and freedom with the ability to drive and work to keep that privilege as long as they can. Driving is a complex task and it takes a number of skills to safely perform this task. It can be a hard decision for families to decide between the safety and independence of their loved one and the safety of others on the road.

Occupational therapists Sheri Ahlrich and Alison Vlieger are able to evaluate patients using the OT-Driver Off-Road Assessment Battery (OT-DORA). OT-DORA is an evidence-based assessment that reviews a patient's past medical history as well as testing their current status of vision, cognition, balance, range of motion, strength, endurance and spatial awareness. Many of these screenings are conducted while using simulated driving activities.   The goal of the assessment is to give objective information about the potential driving abilities of the person in question.

If you have a concern for yourself or a family member, or have been asked to complete the Iowa DOT medical exam, we recommend that you contact your healthcare provider to discuss these concerns. Providers would refer patients to Floyd Valley Therapies for OT-DORA to verify that they are safe on the road. If possible, it is beneficial to schedule this assessment 5 -7 days prior to seeing the provider so that the results can be available during the visit. The assessment typically takes between 60-90 minutes and can add information to help in these tough decisions.

For more information, please contact your healthcare provider directly or Floyd Valley Therapies at (712) 546-3377.

National Assisted Living Week

Park Place Estates Assisted Living will celebrate National Assisted Living Week September 11 - 17. This year's theme is "Keep Connected," recognizing the increasing opportunity technology offers to help residents stay connected with family, friends and community events.

PPE encourages residents to keep connected by taking advantage of the computer lessons that are offered. If a resident needs help with their own device (smart phone, tablet, or computer) or would like to learn more on the shared computer, staff are able to help! They can help set up an email account, enter email addresses of friends and family, send/receive emails and even play computer games!  Staff is available for regularly scheduled lessons or just for that one-time question. Skype is available for those that want to talk "face to face" with family and friends who live further away. Visitors may also use the public WiFi in the building.

"Keeping Connected" is about more than just technology. Assisted living reminds us that sometimes the best relationships are formed face-to-face. For many staff members, residents become family and this bond can never be broken. Assisted living communities are an integral part of the larger community. Staff cultivates connections with local families, business owners, government organizations, community organizers and others to ensure that residents remain an active part of where they call home. PPE residents are regular attendees of the Concert in the Park, Plymouth County Fair, Brown Family concerts, Primebank Ice Cream Social and the Ice Cream Days Parade. The community is also invited to PPE throughout the year such as Guardian Angel preschool, 4-H clubs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Gehlen Catholic students, etc.  PPE continues to encourage residents to stay connected with family and friends through church, card clubs, various clubs and civic organizations.

During Assisted Living Week, we again invite the community to celebrate with us during a Chamber Coffee on Wednesday, September 14 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. In addition to the coffee, other special activities are scheduled for residents including a barn program, pottery project, several community church activities and piano music. Always a big hit, the annual Western Night for the residents and their families is scheduled for Thursday evening. This fun night consists of the residents and staff putting on their best country getups and enjoying good music and a chuck wagon supper.
