President's Column
WOW! Where do I begin? There are so many different memories of the Annual Conference, each one that has added to my overall experience ... from bag pipes, to Maggie ... to Awarding and Honoring the stellar libraries and librarians .... to the wonderful conversations here and there ... to renewing old friendships, and making new friends ... to presenting the Legislative Advocate to Rep. Brown ... each of these was made possible by YOU! YOU are the heart and soul of the Indiana Library Federation.

Highlights from the ILF Annual Conference
Whether your first or twentieth ILF conference, the annual conference was the place to learn about trends, to connect with colleagues and to celebrate library services for Indiana. Here are a few highlights:
- Best-selling author, artist and musician Maggie Stiefvater kicked off the conference with her entertaining keynote. Said a board member, "I bet we are the only library conference that featured bagpipes in a keynote." (photo at right)
- Amy Knight of Perry County Public Library won the 3X3 contest for her STEM programming proposal. Her library will receive a $1,000 mini-grant for the project.
- We awarded 11 awards and 2 scholarships at the Awards and Honors Banquet.
- The audience roared with laughter to Chris Grabenstein as he described adding a "browse button" on the hover ladder for future books about Mr. Lemoncello's Library.
- Strategic Visioning Steering Committee Co-chairs Robyn Young and Latrice Booker described our Vision for the future, recognized all involved in the development and invited attendees to get involved in the work plan.
- We piloted a "Back To Basics" pre-conference about principles of library ethics, cataloguing, reference and collection development.
- President Dr. David Peter announced that members voted overwhelmingly to amend the bylaws. Of the 157 members participating in the electronic ballot, there were 12 no votes and 9 abstentions. He further described the incredible work of volunteers and staff in 2017.
- Treasurer Stephanie Davis described stable and strong ILF finances for a more sustainable future. She also announced a special membership appreciation promotion.
- Poster sessions outlined management techniques and a program for serving people with colorblindness.
- Attendees were able to connect with over 70 exhibitors over a cup of coffee or a snack.
- Popular authors signed books for fans in between sessions.
- The silent auction generated over $1,300 to support scholarships in librarianship.
- Externally recruited experts educated attendees about working with people with developmental disabilities, Nalaxone administration, immigration law, consumer law, makerspace options, supervised child visits in the library and more.
Many thanks to our sponsors including Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, Bose Public Affairs, MCLS and AtoZ Databases.

Consider volunteering with Indiana Library Federation
|
School Library Census
- We need volunteers to make calls and accurately complete a survey instrument about the staffing and status of library services in 381 school districts. This project is critical to our advocacy for school libraries.
Ad hoc workgroups
are formed around specific issues or special projects under development (i.e. adult literacy, supervised child visits, Lawyers in Libraries).
Committees and Divisions
are composed of academic, public and school library staff as well as Friends and Trustees. Committee commitments vary from 2-4 hours every month to 4 meetings a year. Most committees allow participation by conference call and online meeting. Friends and Trustees are especially needed.
Email us
with "volunteer" in the subject line and where you would like to volunteer or submit the
volunteer form online
at the bottom of the membership page. ILF relies on active and engaged volunteers who are current personal members of ILF, support the mission and are willing to fulfill the responsibilities of their specific volunteer role.

Longmont Library’s Chess Club Takes on Hammond, Indiana Club
The Longmont Library’s chess club isn’t your run-of-the-mill chess club. Last year, they hosted a Live Chess game, in which all the chess pieces are played by live people moving across a huge chessboard, and this year, the club is engaged in a game of virtual chess with the ACME Pawn Pushers chess club of the Hammond Public Library in Hammond, Indiana. This virtual chess game is not online, but virtual in an old-fashioned way – with the two clubs following each other’s moves from the distance of one thousand miles.

School Librarian starts book subscription service
School Librarian Diane Rogers saw a bunch of displays for book subscription services at conferences she had been to this past summer, and loved what they did. Some of these services are called OwlCrate, Once upon a Book Club, Shelflove Crate, etc. Of course all of these cost at least $20 a month. So, Diane thought wouldn't it be nice to do this with library books for free. So, she started in October with announcements on the school TV show for 2 weeks and the library bulletin board. She made postcards of information, and keeps a stack of those in the media center.
