ILF President's Column
So, Summer is almost here! I’ve always looked forward to Summer. Reading. Catching up on things I’ve started to read, but haven’t finished reading. I attended a friend’s graduation from Law School. A.R.I.E.S. Provides Books to Local Henry County School Libraries “Together We Learn” is a project of A.R.I.E.S. LCC of Henry County, which reaches all school and public libraries in the county and provides materials related to substance abuse. The program teaches children and adults related skills for solving problems, coping, social competence, autonomy and a sense of self and future.
Colette Huxford, Shenandoah school librarian, took a major role in this project by helping to select books that enhance learning opportunities, knowledge on substance abuse and to motivate student and family communication. The books selected target students living in an addictive home, students who have contact with another student living in an addictive home, students who may be tempted to use or have used drugs, or the individual who just wants to learn more about timely issues in the lives of citizens. Six from ILF visited all 11 Congressional offices on
National Library Legislative Day. We discussed the importance of federal funding and policies that support libraries in Indiana. We delivered letters and shared stories from each Congressional District. We explained how libraries are evolving to meet the changing needs in communities, schools and universities. Members of Congress asked about e-books, changes in circulation, broadband issues and the future of libraries.
|
|
Many thanks to staff and volunteers in libraries across Indiana for providing letters and reaching out to their members of Congress about the importance of federal funding. Library funding was extended (and increased slightly) through Sept. 30.
