During the 2016-17 year, 180 volunteers and 32 Impact Alabama AmeriCorps Members served 1,338 childcare centers, screening 48,565 preschoolers in all 67 counties across the state. 4,128 children (8.5%) failed the screenings and received free or subsidized follow-up care coordinated by Sight Savers America.
Student volunteers from Alabama State University,
Birmingham-Southern College, Spring Hill College, UAH, UAB, The University of Montevallo, UAB School of Medicine, Wallace Community College-Dothan, Cottonwood High School, and The University of Alabama assisted Impact Alabama AmeriCorps Members in conducting screenings across the state.
Since 2004, FocusFirst has screened over 357,000 children, with approximately 10% failing the screenings
and receiving high-quality follow-up care.
