FLORIDA HEALTHY START FUNDING AT RISK
The Senate Healthcare Appropriations Committee budget cuts the State of Florida's Healthy Start funding by a total of $19 million in funding from AHCA and DOH.

This represents a 29% cut to the overall Healthy Start budget and could collapse the program responsible for the system of care in every community for at-risk pregnant women and infants.

HEALTHY START RECEIVES FUNDING TO ASSIST HURRICANE EVACUEES
Orlando Health Awards $12,500 for KIIS Grant

The unexpected devastation caused by Hurricane Maria to the island of Puerto Rico has extended well beyond the island's borders. It has been well publicized that citizens of the island have begun to leave and approximately 200,000 or more are expected to enter the Central Florida community. Many evacuees will join family and friends in Orange County but they will bring little to no necessary personal items or supplies. It is also doubtful their families and friends will be prepared to meet all their basic needs.

The Healthy Start Coalition was awarded $12,500 to provide infant safety items for evacuee families: pack-n-plays and infant car seats. For the expected influx of pregnant Puerto Rican women and young children, having access to and education about child auto-safety restraints has the potential to prevent major injury and loss of life.

If you or someone you know evacuated from Puerto Rico or other island due to Hurricane Maria and are in need of a car seat or pack-n-play, contact Healthy Start at 407-858-1472. Applicants must be a pregnant woman or family with a child birth-3, be a Caribbean island evacuee due to Hurricane Maria, and be a Healthy Start client or enroll in the program.

HEALTHY START HONORS TOP PROVIDERS
Recognizing Top Screening Providers in Orange County

Each year at Healthy Start's Annual Meeting in December, awards are issued to top screening providers and community partners. This year, select provider staff were awarded as "Most Valuable Players" as well. This opportunity allows Healthy Start to recognize those providers who are in compliance with Florida Statutes of screening every prenatal and postnatal patient. In addition, top screening providers reflect understanding of the purpose and importance of the screening form by ensuring their patients complete it, their risk is assessed and an appropriate referral is made to Healthy Start. To all of those who were recognized at our Annual Meeting and many others who weren't, we give you a big thank you! We really appreciate all that you do and want you to know that you are helping make a difference in the lives of the families we serve. Every baby deserves a healthy start!

HAPPY 30TH ANNIVERSARY, PENNY!
Congratulations to our Healthy Start Program Manager, Penny Smith, for 30 years of service to the Florida Department of Health in Orange County! Penny has spent the past 25 years with Healthy Start, first as the Community Liaison ensuring OB providers were trained on the Healthy Start prenatal screen, then as a staff supervisor and ultimately as program manager. Her passion for maternal-child health is evident not only in the countless (i.e. unpaid) hours she spends in the office, at home and at activities throughout the county but especially in ensuring our HS program excels in providing services and meeting our performance measures.    Read More
