Spring 2014

Hello from Mahlah!

Summer is here! Beach parties, BBQs, vacations......wait a second....we still have jobs!! Yes we still have deadlines, emails to answer, houses to clean, and appointments to keep. We are just in a fresh season and with summer comes the fun of good weather for those fabulous parties and renewed energy to plan that vacation. Don't forget to slow down, kick back with a good book, and enjoy the season.

Seasonal Flower Inspiration

Just today I walked into the grocery store and there was a huge display of sunflowers. I got thinking about how fun it is to see the seasonal flowers throughout the year. Daffodils, gladioli, mums....they bring with them the joy of the season. When I see sunflowers I think of warm summer days and happy little bees. I recommend brightening up your home and office with fresh flowers weekly.

A Place For Everything.....

Yes I know, you are all familiar with this phrase. But it's totally true!!! When there is a "place for everything" than "everything" really can be in its place.

Think about ordinary items like silverware. If you need a fork you would likely look in the silverware drawer. Ah a drawer devoted to the silverware. I think you get the idea. Now what if there was a place where batteries, random toys, photographs, and tax papers belonged. Designated areas.

Here's my thinking. Perhaps you have children and you find yourself nagging them to clean up, but when they go to clean up they scoop everything into one bin or under the bed in a heap. Take a look at that pile of randomness and see if you can figure out where these items belong. Where is their "designated" place?

The point is that it is difficult to "clean up" or "put things away" when you can't quickly identify where they belong.

There are thousands of items in our lives that all need a designated place to be put away to. To create these places first sort items by categories. This is a good time to be realistic about what to keep and what to donate, sell, or toss. Create designated areas for these items in locations that make sense. Office supplies should be near work spaces. Children's items in their rooms. Books on shelves. Items like batteries and electronic could be contained in bins and labeled. If you designate a drawer for something like cloth napkins or hair accessories and it's over flowing, then down size these items so that the "designated" area doesn't spill over to the counter or neighboring drawer.

Give it a try and see the difference in clean up time. Ps. The biggest challenge I can give you is to eliminate the "junk" drawer!!!

Healthy Home Tip

When the fridge is starting to look bare and the veggies are getting to be on their last leg, it's the perfect time to make soup!! A vegetable soup can have just about anything in it. Leftover mashed potatoes, random root veggies, squishy tomatoes, bits of steak or chicken......I could go on. Have some rice or pasta? Toss that in there too. I have made many a miscellaneous batch of veggie soup by cleaning out the fridge. Yum! And yes sometimes we need comfort food even in the Summer.

SCM Maker's Market

The Santa Cruz Mountains Makers Market is dedicated to supporting the community by giving local artists, crafters, culinary creators, and musicians a venue to showcase and sell their goods at a regular monthly market while also financially benefiting a local non-profit, Mountain Community Resources (MCR).

This free event will be held at the Mountain Community Resource's parking lot at 6134 Highway 9, Felton, CA on May 4, June 22, and August 17, 2014. Show hours will be from 10am-5pm. More Markets are planned for 2015,  giving local makers a regular venue to sell their creations. There is plenty of customer parking available and this location is in the center of the busiest part of Felton and the gateway to the rest of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
