Hello from Mahlah!

Fall is my favorite time of year. The cool breezes, the leaves blowing.....ah Fall. Now is a great time to start thinking about sprucing up your home for the upcoming Holidays. Fix up that guest room, organize your kitchen inside and out, clean up the yard and patiosfor the season, and think of a fresh look for the living room.

Easy Updates

Have tired furniture that could really use a facelift? Paint is a fantastic way to revamp almost anything. Color and hardware can help create a whole new style and look. Here is an example.

The Organized Fridge

What is behind your closed refrigerator doors? If your reply is "I have no idea!" then these tips are for you. There's nothing more frustrating than having to throw away food because you forgot it was in there and it went bad. Or to have a nasty smell seeping through the house every time someone opens the fridge. Here are some tips for keeping your fridge organized.

Keep ALL condiments on the door. Reduce the quantity by using dressing and sauces up before opening new ones. For instance, do you need five bottles of salad dressing open at once?

If you have room, also keep beverage items on the door. Wine and beverage mixes together, OJ, milk, and creamer together.

Use trays and bins to contain similar items. In this example bread and tortillas go in this tray together. Adjust shelves to accommodate certain items. Eggs, for example, don't need much height, but are long.

Use baskets to make finding fruit that needs to be eaten first easier. You can also use bins, trays, and baskets to contain items like yogurts, nuts, and snacks.

Depending on the types of food you buy you can adjust the use of the drawers in your fridge. Use at least two for veggies and fruits and use others for grouping meats, cheeses, and dairy.

Now the most important tips for not over stuffing your fridge.......

  • Be careful to purchase quantities of food that "fit" in your fridge and that you will have time to eat before they go bad. Avoid buying extra food because "you have a coupon or it was on sale". Buy what makes sense. Food going bad is money wasted.
  • Always clean out the old, spoiled, and expired food from your fridge BEFORE loading in fresh groceries.

Healthy Home Tip

As mentioned in the organizing fridge tips to the left, cleaning out your fridge BEFORE stuffing in a fresh batch of groceries is an excellent way to avoid having spoiled stinky food lingering. Here are a few more kitchen tips.
  • Move older food to the front of the fridge. For instance, don't stick the new milk in front of the old one.
  • Finish foods such as cereals, salad dressings, and bread before buying or opening new ones. For instance, does a family of 4 really need 6 boxes of cereal open at one time?
  • Buy what can be consumed before your next trip to the store.
  • Plan meals and buy the ingredients to create it together.
  • Clean out your pantry and cabinets at least once a month to check for expire foods and remind yourself to use what's been shoved to the back.
  • Avoid buying foods that are on sale just because they are on sale. If you cannot fit 4 bags of chips in the pantry than DO NOT buy them. Sale or not!
  • Use canisters to contain goods and buy in bulk the amount that actually fits in the canister at one time.
  • Use baskets and bins to contain like items such as bags of nuts, snack bars, and pasta.
