Eric Gleason uncovers The Dalles Chinatown at Sense of Place lecture Dec. 4th

Gorge Owned (GO!) welcomes archeologist Eric Gleason to the Columbia Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Dec. 4th as part of the Sense of Place lecture series. Gleason will discuss the 19th century Chinese community that once thrived in The Dalles. The town saw its first Chinese immigrants in the 1850s and by the 1880s, had it own Chinatown on East First Street. Gleason will illuminate the formation of and everyday life in this Chinatown with historic maps, photographs and documents from the National Archives.

Gleason moved to The Dalles in 1989 with his wife, Jacqueline Cheung. His passions for archaeology and historic preservation merged with the discovery of a rich archaeological site while restoring an old building downtown. This ongoing project is helping to uncover the history and significance of The Dalles' Chinatown. Gleason studied anthropology at Washington State University. He has worked as a field archaeologist for more than four decades, most recently working for the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver.

Gleason's lecture begins at 7 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 4th at Columbia Center for the Arts. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Come early to enjoy a glass of wine or beer and meet others in the community. The cost of the lecture is $5. Entrance is free for GO! members.

"Sasquatch Revealed" Exhibit opens Dec. 28

Does Sasquatch exist? Rumors of a large, hairy, man-like creature roaming the Cascade Mountains have existed for centuries. Where does myth end and science begin? Columbia Gorge Discovery Center presents "Sasquatch Revealed," a new exhibit opening Saturday, December 28, 2013 with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and a speaker presentation by Dr. Jeff Meldrum and Chris Murphy following at 6:30 p.m.

This exhibit draws from all the available scientific research and evidence compiled to date on the hominoid known as Sasquatch, or Bigfoot. The display, curated by Christopher Murphy of Vancouver, British Columbia, will be at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center through February 23, 2014. Explore audio segments, view a gallery of footprint and handprint casts, reports of sightings in Wasco County and United States, newspaper reports, comparative skulls, and artist renditions.

Buffet dinner will be served starting at 5:30 pm in the Basalt Rock Caf, with your choice of herb-encrusted prime rib or roast salmon with lemon dill glaze. Children's menu includes 'Mountain Mac & Cheese' and 'Sasquatch Stronganoff'.

Following the dinner, noted Sasquatch researchers Dr. Jeff Meldrum and Chris Murphy will give a presentation.

Dr. Jeff Meldrum, Professor of Anthropology from Idaho State University will give a talk Dec. 28 and sign his acclaimed book, "Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science." Medrum's book takes a detailed look at the scientific DNA and forensic evidence gathered on Sasquatch. Meldrum has published numerous academic papers ranging from vertebrate evolutionary morphology, and the emergence of bipedal locomotion in modern humans. Dr. Meldrum is also a co-editor of a series of books on paleontology.

Chris Murphy became involved in the Sasquatch mystery when he met Ren Dahinden in 1993. He then worked with Dahinden in producing posters from the Patterson/Gimlin film and marketing them along with Sasquatch footprint casts. In 2000, Chris embarked on a project to assemble a comprehensive pictorial presentation on the Sasquatch. This initiative led to publication of his book "Meet the Sasquatch," written in association with John Green and Thomas Steenburg, and his Sasquatch exhibit at the Vancouver, B.C., Museum.

Cost for Adult dinner and presentation: $20 members, $25 non-members; Children: $10 members, $15 non-members.

The Dalles Lion's Club Completes Sight Screening for Regional Schools

During the week of November 18th to the 22nd,The Dalles Lions and Leo's (Youth branch of Lions) screened over seven hundred and fifty first, third and fifth grade students during the annual sight screening.  Students attending Col. Wright, St. Mary's Academy, Chenowith Elementary, Dry Hollow, and Mosier Community schools were the first students screened with the newest leading edge technology. The SPOT vision anylyser takes a picture of the inside of the eye revealing  near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), unequal refractive power (anisometropia), blurred vision, eye structure problem (astigmatism), pupil size deviations (anisocoria), and eye misalignment (strabismus.)  In just a few seconds, the SPOT vision screening provides a comprehensive, reliable analysis that enables informed decision making about the need for follow-up professional diagnosis.  The digital device is designed to work as easily with toddlers as it is with all ages.

This year, students ranging in ages 6 to 15 years old were also screened for stereophonic depth perception.  Most individuals perceive the sensation of depth, distance or closeness of the objects around us. This process is called stereopsis or stereoscopic vision. Those that lack this ability can improve the condition by exercise and treatment.  3-D vision allows a person to distinguish between relative depth and size of objects.

In conclusion, ninety-one students out of seven hundred and fifty two students were identified with a recommendation for additional vision diagnosis.  Thirty-three students received a 3-D deficiency and also will be recommended for further evaluation.  Schools will be in direct contact with parents to seek additional professional diagnosis. Financial assistance will be available for parents struggling financially to seek eye health care for their children.  Parents are encouraged to contact any Lion's member for more information or enter www.thedalleslions.org.

Dear GO Members and GO! Local Campaign participants,

With the holiday shopping season here, I wanted to provide you with some inspirational messages to help encourage your customers, friends and relatives to shift their shopping to local, independent businesses - wherever they may be.

First, what is the GO! Local Campaign?
A grassroots effort to help ensure more money stays in our beloved community. It's an ongoing campaign and will not end once the holidays are over. So please share these messages throughout the New Year

Second, what is the GO! Local Challenge?
A sweepstakes that incentivizes people for shopping locally and donating to local nonprofits. Here's how it works:

1.) Spend at least $50 total with 3 local businesses or nonprofits.

2.) Register your purchases at www.GorgeOwned.org/LOCAL

3.) We will select a winner EVERY FRIDAY in 2014 - more often during the holiday season. The winner will receive a gift certificate to a local, participating business.

On Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, everyone who registers by midnight will earn TWO chances to win.

You can still donate a gift certificate to the GO! Local Challenge by mailing one to: PO Box 402, Hood River, OR 97031

Third, how to spread the word?
  • Print out the attached receipt tags and hand them out to customers. (Note, they are double sided and include educational messages on the back.)
  • Use the attached Keep Your Money Where Your Heart is logo in your e-newsletter, facebook page, website, etc.
  • Follow GO! on facebook if you aren't already to stay up to date on the latest GO! Local news and events - plus, you can reshare our educational posts about shopping local.
