Associate Laboratory Director Jud Virden has been elected to the rank of fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. AAAS is the world's largest multidisciplinary scientific society which seeks to "advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people." Virden oversees PNNL's energy and environmental research activities. He was recognized for his leadership in developing solutions to clean energy challenges and developing partnerships that move technology into the marketplace... read more.
A subsurface imaging software that combines supercomputing data analysis with real-time imaging and modeling capabilities is one of the 100 most innovative scientific breakthroughs of the year. Real-time Four-Dimensional Subsurface Imaging Software, or E4D-RT, and its inventor, PNNL scientist Tim Johnson, were recognized November 3 at the R&D 100 Awards ceremony near Washington, D.C. The software allows researchers to remotely look into the Earth's subsurface... read more.
PNNL researcher Jun Liu is among the most highly cited scientists in the world, based on the 2016 Highly Cited Researcher list from Clarivate Analytics. The list features scientists whose citations rank in the top one percent within 22 subject areas. Liu was recognized for important contributions in two of those areas: chemistry and materials science. His work in these two areas encompasses materials synthesis, characterization, and energy storage... read more.
Finding better options for carbon dioxide capture is laborious and expensive. Each new solvent can take months to create and longer to test, but scientists at PNNL have found a new way. They created and validated a computational model that predicts how easily a solvent will flow and how much carbon it will capture. The model offers definitive, accurate predictions about different carbon-capture solvents and can show the potential capture properties of a solvent...
