Today's Lesson:

Forgiveness is fear-removal
Dear Child of Light,

Jesus tells us in Chapter 14 of A Course in Miracles, " ... the more you look at fear the less you see it, and the clearer what it conceals becomes."  This is why ACIM offers us a forgiveness practice.  Forgiveness is "for giving" every fear, every secret, every unspeakable feeling we bury deep inside ourselves to the Holy Spirit.

Fear makes itself felt on every level:  physical (sensations), emotional (feelings) and psychological (beliefs).   Physically, we may feel vulnerable to attackers or disease.  Emotionally,  we suffer from loneliness, shame, guilt, fear or abandonment, jealousy, the list goes on and on.  Psychologically, not being believed or being given the silent treatment are tormenting for most people.  These are just some examples of how the ego uses fear.

To utilize the ACIM forgiveness practice, we have to allow our worst fears to surface.  Fears that we will be hated, rejected and maligned  by others if we speak our truth, make a mistake, or just be ourselves.  This is the deep existential guilt every human carries at our core, because we believe God wants to punish us.  And that's scary!

"Bring, therefore, all your dark and secret thoughts to Him, and look upon them with Him.  He holds the light, and you the darkness.  They cannot coexist when both of You together look on them.  His judgment must prevail, and He will give it to you as you join your perception to His."

The Holy Spirit, sometimes referred to as the Voice for God, only "judges" us with Love.  He knows us for What we really are--an extension of God's Love and He reminds us that we are always included in that Love.  For some of us, it is a great relief to give everything to the Holy Spirit.  And for some there is terrible disappointment when we don't get the results we hoped for.  Notice if you're harboring hopes.  That means you're choosing the ego as your teacher and telling Spirit how to do His job.  All we're asked to do is give every secret, open every door and bid Spirit to enter our darkness and lighten it away.

HOMEWORK
Start a journal and make two columns:
Dark Secrets              Voice for God
List your secrets on the left--go deep and find the fears beneath the fears.  Hatred, terror, shame, rage--all of these are forms of fear.  If this seems dramatic, and you think you're only annoyed, anxious, embarrassed, and irritated--same thing :)
Allow a quiet moment to receive your message from the Holy Spirit. Put it in the right column. If nothing seems to come, write,
"I understand, and I love you."

The other day I was taking a walk and heard a crunch in the brush at the side of the road.  Maybe it was a bear or a bobcat--recently I had seen both near my new home in Florida.  The potential violence of New York City streets, where I lived most of my life, felt much safer than all this nature.  I felt fear, and said to Jesus, "I know you're walking with me.  I give you this fear that there might be a dangerous animal in the brush."  Then I went deeper.
"I give you my fear of being caught by surprise, paralyzed with terror, not knowing what to do, being brutally torn from limb to limb."  I started to smile.

It was fun to be allowed to say my fear full-out without someone telling me to calm down, or stop being dramatic, or to arm myself with a gun.  "Jesus,
I give you my belief that animals are dangerous, my fear of physical pain, and of death."  I noticed I was losing interest in feeling afraid.  My state of mind shifted from fearful to a suspended moment where I felt a peaceful acceptance that yes, anything could happen ... and then there was a shift.

I had a vision that I was walking within an egg-shaped oval Light which was illuminating me and shining through me.   There I was, flanked on either side by a burly yet graceful black bear and a sleek golden panther.  Trailing behind us were deer and their tender white-spotted fawns. Jesus explains in the Course, "The lion and the lamb lying down together symbolize that strength and innocence are not in conflict, but naturally live in peace."  This is what happens when we give ourselves to Spirit and allow our fears to be undone.

The Course advises us to ask, "Who walks with me?" a thousand times a day.  One crucial aspect of forgiveness is "for giving" our fears to the Holy Spirit.  Little by little, we will experience fear dissolving into peace, and Light shining away darkness.  Stay with it--unlearning takes time and repetition.
