Nurturing Just Visions for Human Rights in Post-Earthquake Haiti

Like in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Haitians are fighting for their human rights, justice and a voice in their own reconstruction. Learn how you can support their struggles! This event will feature a panel discussion, recent videos and a book launch for Tectonic Shifts: Haiti Since the Earthquake. Speakers include Dr. Yvelyne Germain-McCarthy, President of the Association Haitienne de Developpement HumainWadner Pierre, journalist from Haiti now living in New Orleans, Alexis Erkert, Coordinator for the Haiti program of New Orleans-based organization Other Worlds, and Deepa Panchang, author of several articles on cholera and the right to water in Haiti and contributor to Tectonic Shifts.

City Council to Vote on Master Plan Amendments 

City Council will vote on all of the proposed Master Plan Amendments at its June 28 meeting. City Council has until early July to act on these Master Plan Amendments, and this will likely be its last opportunity to do so. Information on all of the proposed Master Plan Amendments can be found here.

State Farm Youth Advisory Board Invites Grant Applications for Service-Learning Projects 

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board, a philanthropic program of State Farm is accepting applications for youth service-learning projects designed to create sustainable local change in communities across the United States and Canada. Projects must be designed to address the root cause of the following issues: access to higher education/closing the achievement gap, financial literacy, community safety and natural disaster preparedness, social health and wellness, and environmental responsibility. Applicant organizations must be a K-12 public or charter school, or institution of higher education. Nonprofit organizations also are eligible if they are able to demonstrate how they plan to impact student achievement within the public K-12 curriculum. Grants will range from $25,000 to $100,000. View the complete RFP here.

  

2012-13 Request for Application (RFA) for Community Advocacy Grants (CAGs)

The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL) has released its 2012-13 Request for Application (RFA) for Community Advocacy Grants (CAGs). You can review the RFA and find answers to the RFA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) through our website. The purpose of these grants is to foster community involvement in carrying out TFL's goals of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke, preventing tobacco initiation by youth, and reducing tobacco-related health disparities. TFLCAGs assist in the growth and development of statewide capacity building and mobilization efforts for tobacco prevention and control. It is through the statewide coordination of these strengthened efforts that the goal of prevention is met through policy change. The three areas that the RFA will focus on are youth, young adults (college/university), and employees disparately impacted by tobacco in the workplace. The CAGs funding period will be from July 1, 2012 to June 15, 2013 (FY 12/13). Benefits to the TFL Community Advocacy Grantees include: funding for staff support stipends, funding for community capacity building and staff professional development, and networking opportunities through membership in your regional coalition.Please contact Cassandra at ccontreras@lphi.org or 301.9839 if you have any questions.
