 Thought of the Day

inspirationGreat leaders are idealists. They are optimists.

They overestimate what we are capable of and inspire us to believe the same.

Greetings!

I often hear new sustainability and CSR leaders say, "But, how do we get people to care about this stuff?  How do we get them to care about sustainability?"

Today's newsletter addresses this question in many ways.  It identifies the role of inspiration, the value of challenging the way we think about things, the impact on staff productivity and the unintended consequences we create because of "out of date" thinking.

NBS Research cites training and developing connections across the company as key leverage points for success.  Our programs will give you a new perspective and connections across your company and beyond.  Want others to care about sustainability? Start right here.

"How do we get people to care about sustainability?"

If I have heard that question once, I have heard it a hundred times.

This is the focus of our Reconceiving Conservation Series.  In August, we held one SOLD OUT webinar and will be hosting Part 2 on September 18th (it's FREE).

ON Line Course Answers Difficult Questions

But webinars don't give us enough time to really address these questions and develop a strategy for our organization, community or country.  So Ed Quevedo will be doing a 4-part ON-Line Course starting October 16th

He will be addressing difficult questions like:

  1. How can we understand and use the conservation ethic to drive personal and cultural behavior change toward sustainable development?
  2. How did conservation become burdened with connotations of limits and inhibition of action, rather than abundance and transformational bounty?
  3. How can we have got so wrong the relationship among ecosystems, economics, and community development, and how can we set this straight?
  4. How can we grasp the enormity of the refashioning of the entire material economy, and how can community development be a tool in that refashioning?

Reconceiving Conservation Overview - in 10 minutes - gain critical insights on how to take a new look at sustainability and the conservation ethic.
Reconceiving Conservation Overview - in 10 minutes - gain critical insights on how to take a new look at sustainability and the conservation ethic.

Check out this overview video of Webinar 1, join us for Webinar 2 and sign up for Reconceiving Conservation the ON-Line Course that starts Oct. 16th.  Join us in re-engineering our thinking to reconceive conservation.

ProductivityFeatured Research: Environmental Performance Boosts Employee Productivity

In new research by the Network for Business Sustainability,Network for Business Sustainability  Researchers Magali Delmas and Sanja Pekovic found an astounding 16 percent boost in employee productivity infirms that had voluntarily adopted sustainable practices, specifically Environmental Management systems.

Delmas and Pekovic found that Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are associated with high productivity because they result in more employee training and connections across the company.

These findings provide additional incentive for businesses to adopt green practices. With EMSs, companies can manage processes more efficiently and draw new customers; they will also strengthen their workforce.

Sustainability Toolkit Webinar
sustainability toolkit
Learn how to use the Sustainability Toolkit for implementation of your sustainability plan.

When: September 26, 2013, 12 noon EST

Where: ON-Line

The Sustainability Toolkit was developed to address a critical gap in the evolving field of sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

Various organizations have developed guidance documents that define social responsibility (e.g. ISO 26000) or describe how sustainability efforts should be reported (e.g. Global Reporting Initiative).

However, there has been a lack of available guidance on how to actually implement sustainability in an organization.

Designed to Meet ISO 26000 & GRI

The toolkit has been designed to fill this sustainability implementation gap by combining the principles and core considerations of ISO 26000 with the framework defined by leading management system standards such as ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Given its management system foundation, the toolkit provides a practical approach to sustainability implementation that is applicable to all sizes of organizations across industry sectors.

overshootFEATURED RESOURCE: Global Overshoot Map
August 20 was Earth Overshoot Day for 2013.  This is the date when humanity exhausted nature's budget for the year.

We are now operating in overdraft. For the rest of the year, we will maintain our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In 1993, this date fell on October 21st.  Two months earlier than it does now.  Every year it gets earlier.

Want to know how this has changed over time or what countries are most over drawn?  Check out the interactive map below.  It will blow your mind.
