FOURTEC NEWSLETTER

Bird's-eye view...

In our June newsletter issue we present a new case study, describing how Fourtec's MicroLite II Temperature and Humidity USB data loggers are used for a scientific research project by monitoring the selection of birds' nesting sites, and using the data to uncover factors influencing their choice of nesting grounds.

In our regular Market News slot we highlight the new Global Cold Chain Directory Mobile App application by GCCA. In addition, we link to an interesting news item focusing on the China  cold chain market showing that the fresh food e-commerce sector is expected to grow rapidly over the next five years, leading to increased development of cold chain logistics in China.

MicroLite Solution - Monitoring Birds' Nest Site Selection

Application: Study of environmental conditions
Organization: Haifa University - The Department of Evolutionary & Environmental Biology

Background:

The population decrease of the Collared Pratincole bird in a Middle Eastern country resulted in a project designed to halt this trend. The Collared Pratincole nests upon moist meadows and grasslands. These habitats are becoming scarce, having been replaced by cultivated fields near water, with low vegetation. Nesting in these cultivated areas actually places the birds in danger, due to pesticides used in the fields to eradicate insects, the birds' primary source of food, as well as the threat to the nests from trucks and other vehicles operating in the area. There have been attempts to find safer nesting places, via dialogue with the farmers of these fields in addition to monitoring the nesting population. At the same time, designated areas were specifically treated to encourage nesting in order to attract the birds but these attempts have failed. The aims of this study were to characterize the optimal habitat conditions for nesting, in order to assist conservation efforts in locating a suitable alternative habitat for the Collared Pratincole.

Research Method:
The Pratincoles were tracked daily from arrival until establishing a breeding colony. Selected nesting field's parameters were measured including temperature; relative humidity; food availability; presence of other bird species; vegetation cover; soil type; soil texture and characteristics of the agricultural landscape. All of the data was added as layers to GIS software for spatial analysis to uncover the factors that influence the birds' choice of nesting grounds. Data loggers were placed to monitor the temperature and relative humidity parameters.

GCCA Released a New Global Cold Chain Directory Mobile App

The Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) has released a new mobile GCCA directory app. The app features companies from every sector of the cold chain, including cold storage warehouses, logistics providers, construction companies, and industry suppliers. It is also the first mobile app providing a buyer's guide for the cold chain industry.

The providers included in the directory are members of the GCCA Core Partners and represent major industries engaged in temperature-controlled logistics.

Fourtec is a proud member of the Global Cold Chain Alliance and can be found in the new global cold chain directory mobile app.

The GCCA Directory mobile app offers a convenient way to access the world's largest directory of cold chain providers on tablets or Smart Phones. Provider listings in the app feature descriptions, contact information, and a map of locations for easy navigation. Robust search functionality allows users to search for providers by company type, services, or location.

To download the complimentary app, visit the iTunes App Store or Google Play and search for "GCCA Directory".

The new mobile app complements the print edition of the 2014-2015 Global Cold Chain Directory, which features 300 pages of cold chain providers.

Last month, Amazon China invested US$20 million in Shanghai-

based Yummy77, which was the company's first strategic investment after entering China's market. Jingdong Mall CEO Liu Qiangdong, meanwhile, has also announced

E-commerecplans to team up with Dalian Zhangzi Island Fishery Group, China's largest seafood company, to achieve vertical integration in the online-to-offline supply chain in the seafood sector.

E-commerce firms have become the most important factor driving the development of cold chain logistics. Last year, the capacity of cold storage in China was 26 million tonnes, up 36% from a year earlier.  Several analysts predicted that the cold chain industry will maintain a 20% growth rate this year, they also projected that an additional 30 million tonnes of cold storage will be in demand during the next five years.

Fourtec offers a wide range of ideal solutions for cold chain logistics including small form factor USB data loggers, one-trip data loggers and wireless systems, suiting the complete cold chain process: packaging, transporting and warehousing.

Instructions for Forming a New DataNet Network

There may be several reasons why you require performing the Form New Network function on the DataNet Receiver, either on a new or established network.

  • You may be relocating your system to another location, and therefore need to optimize the network to the RF environment
  • Your network is experiencing intermittent RF transmission issues which can be rectified by moving to a cleaner RF channel.
  • You are installing a new DataNet network and must form a new network rather than use the Receiver factory-defined network.
Whatever the reason, we would like to offer updated instructions to ensure this critical procedure is performed correctly, by the book.
