Hidden Business Series
ServiceMaster Restore of Alexandria, VA

One of the largest businesses off Richmond Highway is surprisingly difficult to spot. Voted "Best Large Business" of 2009 by the Mount Vernon-Lee ChamberHidden Gems of Commerce, the 30,000 SF Service Master Restore of Alexandria doesn't get much foot traffic with a Fordson Road address.

For many businesses, visibility and signage are everything when it comes to marketing, but not so for ServiceMaster.

Let's think for a moment. If your home or commercial property is damaged by a flood, fire, smoke, mold, biohazards or even extreme hoarding, what is the first thing you do?

"Typically, a person who experiences a residential or commercial catastrophe calls his or her insurance company or property manager right off the bat" says Service Master Account Manager Jennifer Hammer. "A substantial component of our marketing strategy is to network with insurance companies and property management groups to connect with people in need of emergency response services ASAP." Most people are not aware of catastrophe cleaning services until a catastrophe happens. But when it does, the ServiceMaster team is ready to go 24/7/365.

For 28 years, the ServiceMaster Alexandria franchise has built a solid reputation in providing emergency response cleaning services to businesses and homes in the DC Metro region, and is currently the largest ServiceMaster franchise in the area. They have also partnered with Max Paxton from A&E's show "Hoarders" to provide restoration services for cases involving extreme hoarding. During SFDC's tour of the facility, we learned that the severity of a hoarding disorder ranges from 1-5 (slight - extreme) with the majority of Americans falling in the 1-2 category. Now we know who to call when our hoarding tendencies get out of hand!

"Jeff Todd Way" Connects Rt. 1 to Telegraph Road
New road opens spring 2014

On December 18, 2013, elected officials, reporters, Chamber members, citizens groups and community members gathered at the intersection of Richmond Highway and Old Mill Road to dedicate a new road in honor of Jeff Todd, longtime community and business leader.

Todd served on the board of several non-profit organizations including the Mount Vernon-Lee Education PartnershipGood Shepherd Housing and Family Services, and United Community Ministries. He improved the lives and education of students by donating thousands of dollars to local schools, and was recognized by the Board of Supervisors for his amazing generosity.

"Jeff was an example, as a father, as a philanthropist, as a community leader, as chairman of the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Mount Vernon Visioning Task Force, to be emulated by all residents of Mount Vernon. He was an extraordinary man who loved his community and was deeply loved and admired by his family and friends," said Supervisor Gerry Hyland.

Jeff Todd Way will provide easy and direct access to Telegraph Road (the Kingstowne area) from Richmond Highway. Currently, the main routes to Telegraph Road are at the top of Richmond Highway via the Beltway or North Kings Highway, or near Fort Belvoir via the Fairfax County Parkway. Jeff Todd Way will be a more convenient "midway" connector road that will alleviate traffic and help people get where they need to go faster and more efficiently. The road is set to open this spring.
