THANK YOU, VOLUNTEERS! The Grassy Creek section of trail is almost complete!
Pictures are from recent trail workdays in the Grassy Creek area. The bridge is an Eagle Scout project of Harrison Hall which connects the trail from Byrd's Branch Campground to Grassy Creek Vineyards & Winery. The bridge and the 1.5 mile trail section will be officially opening on September 12 at the Grassy Creek Gala. This section of trail is part of EVTA's primary focus of connecting downtown Elkin to Stone Mountain State Park (24 miles) via a developing segment of the Mountains to Sea Trail. EVTA will be opening more sections to the public as they are finished.

Byrd's Branch Campground
A big welcome to Byrd's Branch Campground on the developing Stone Mountain/
Mountains-to-Sea Trail! This will be a great resting spot for thru-hikers, weekend warriors, campers and folks doing day hikes. Thank you, Jerry and Sarah Byrd! Here's a link to an Elkin Tribune article on the campground with lots of good pictures...

Fundraiser finish line will be at the Elkin library bridge on Main Street

Will it be a duck this year? Or a turtle? First prize will be a kayak, personal flotation device and paddle (currently displayed in 222 Public House in Elkin) - donated by Yadkin River Adventures Kayak and Canoe Rental. Prizes also include three kid's bicycles from Walmart; Tweetsie Railroad and NC Zoo tickets, gift cards from restaurants, wine tastings, and many other donated prizes. Get your children and grandchildren signed up soon! You don't have to be present to win, but you'll miss the most exciting race since the Kentucky Derby.

You can adopt a duck or turtle at the Elkin Farmer's Market or send a check to EVTA, PO Box 91, Elkin NC 28621 indicating how many $5 ducks or turtles you would like to adopt. Make sure to include your phone number so we can call if you are a winner. All sales benefit Yadkin Valley Rotary and Elkin Valley Trails Associaton. Rotary proceeds will be used for college scholarships for high school students in Wilkes, Surry and Yadkin counties who have demonstrated significant service to their community.  Elkin Valley Trails Association proceeds will support trail building efforts, including a 180-foot bridge at the end our our current in town section of the trail to Stone Mountain State Park.

An exciting day in Elkin!

COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF DAVIDSON...
helping to link Stone Mtn to Elkin on the MST!

The Community School of Davidson, a charter school, has a summer community service program and one of their group leaders, Greg Cain, contacted EVTA to set up a trail work days program for Stone Mountain State Park and our trails.

During the week of July 13-18, eight students and two adults from the Community School of Davidson, spent volunteer time on the Mountains to Sea Trail in and outside Stone Mountain State Park. Over five days, they constructed more than sixty water bars on the MST on Wells Knob and north of the Stone Mountain Country Store. At a farewell luncheon provided by Yadkin Valley Trail Riders, each student was presented with a certificate of appreciation from EVTA and Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail. The school is already talking about doing another volunteer effort on the MST next year!

OUR COMMUNITY AND ALL MOUNTAINS TO SEA TRAIL FRIENDS THANK YOU!

If you or your group would like to do a similar project, please contact EVTA Trail Development Coordinator,
Bob Hillyer . It is volunteer effort that is building this trail from Elkin to Stone Mountain!

Special thanks to generous landowners for making this
great community project happen.
