Know National Parks at Your Library in November
Happy birthday National Park Service! In 1916 President Wilson signed the act creating a federal bureau responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments, and today the National Park system consists of more than 400 specific areas of natural and historic importance, covering more than 84 million acres. We'll celebrate the history, geology and beauty of our parks this November. All programs are free and open to the public; find a full listing here.
Get Ready, Get Set ... Write!
Nearly half a million people around the world will set aside time in November to write their stories. It's all part of National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, which aims to get people of all ages to try to write 50,000 words by the end of November.  This year we open our doors to host programs for aspiring novelists! W eekly meetings at the Downtown Bend Library encourage writers to check in, cheer each other on, discuss technique and do some writing together. Click here for more info.
Blogging and Creative Writing Workshops for Teens, Tweens and Adults
You may not be able to write 50,000 words in November, but how about starting a blog? It's a great way to express your creativity while you get into the writing habit.  Join us for a blogging workshop where you can learn the whys and hows of starting your own blog. Blogging can be an easy and effective way to entertain, educate and inform. This is a great opportunity for adults and teens. For teens in particular, don't miss the Teen Writing Group on October 21 at Dudley's Book Shop Cafe. And for tweens (ages 9-12) we have a four-part Tween Creative Writing workshop that will help budding writers unleash their creativity. We even have a Kids Creative Writing Camp just for kids ages 6-8. All workshops are free!
Celebrate Día de Muertos
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and in the United States. Join us at the Redmond and East Bend Libraries for a celebration of this holiday. We'll have dead bread, hot drinks and sugar skulls. Free and open to all! Habra pan muerto, chocolate caliente y calaveras para decorar

All Libraries Closed on October 27
With libraries from Sisters to La Pine, and in cities in between, the Deschutes Public Library District covers a lot of ground. Once every two years we bring together all library staff in one place to discuss ways in which we can continue to best serve our customers and the community. This year all libraries will be closed on October 27 for this bi-annual staff day. But all of our digital online resources will still be available, so download, research and explore!
