Ready for School iPads in Des Moines 

 

iPads were provided to Color My World Child Care and Preschool in Des Moines as a part of the Ready for School Initiative. The staff at Color My World received training on how to use PBS resources. 

The iPads are part of a comprehensive community approach that uses online games, instructional materials and educational activities to help children increase their school readiness and success. Learn more about online PBS resources for kids.

Environment: Paws and Effect
Grades K-5

In this Martha Speaks video, Martha discovers the painful effects of littering. Alice, Helen, and T.D. share ideas on how to spread the word that littering hurts not only the environment but also those that live in it. When used as a part of Martha's True Stories Buddies Program, buddy pairs can discuss how to get the message out about the consequences of littering while creating 'No Littering' signs. Learn More

Players are challenged to complete a series of missions to photograph desert plants and animals in the Australian outback in this interactive. Through the clues that Plum provides, players learn about desert ecosystems, the plants and animals living there, and how they are adapted to desert life. Learn More
Teaching Literature in Grade 2
Professional Development 

Teachers model classroom practices for teaching literature in grade 2. Students identify character, setting and points of view. Students also address who, what, where, when, why and how questions to demonstrate understanding of key details. Students compare and contrast different versions of the same story. Learn More

Scientists in North Carolina are working to determine if the mix of pharmaceuticals and personal care products that find their way into the state's water system are affecting the fish and crab populations. Learn More

Converting Rational Numbers
Grade 7

In this video, learn how to use division and place value to convert fractions to decimals. In the accompanying classroom activity, students watch the video to help them learn how to convert a fraction to a decimal using division. Then, they turn their attention to placing rational numbers on a number line. Practicing the placement of these numbers reinforces students' number sense. It also gives them practice converting among the different representations of a single rational number. Learn More

In this video from American Masters: Salinger, students learn about the enormous cultural impact of The Catcher in the Rye and the media frenzy that surrounded J.D. Salinger in the early 1960s. The accompanying materials contain a background essay, that includes an expert from the original book flap written by Salinger, discussion questions and teaching tips. Learn More

Grades 9-12

Segregation in housing and education made for some serious inequality for African Americans. As a result, the Civil Rights movement was born. John will talk about the early careers of Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and even Earl Warren. He'll teach you about Brown v. Board of Education, the lesser known Mendez v.
