In2Care Mosquito Traps Available for Sale
The Saint Lucia Hotel and Tourism Association (SLHTA), in response to the rising concerns about the Zika Virus and its implications on the productivity and quality of life of our residents and visitors, continues to prioritize the deployment of resources to address these concerns.  The traps attract and kill container-breeding mosquito species: Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which are vectors of Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika virus.
 
The SLHTA wishes to remind you that the In2Care Traps are available to all SLHTA Members at a special discounted price:
  • Traps -  EC$68.50 per piece (plus VAT)
  • Gauzes - EC$37.00 per piece (plus VAT)

The Traps and Gauzes are also available to all staff of SLHTA Member Properties and Establishments.

 
Please also note that members may dialogue with FDL Pest Control to ascertain the number of traps required for their establishment.  Orders will be on a first pay first serve basis. Once members have placed orders for the traps with the SLHTA, they will be invoiced by the SLHTA. Please confirm your orders  by emailing slhta@slhta.com  or call 4525978/4531811.
Homage to local family for 50-year contribution to Tourism
The Government of Saint Lucia has paid glowing tribute to one local family for its long and illustrious contribution to the development of Saint Lucia's tourism industry.

SLHTA Junior Culinary Team Wins Gold
Another exciting year of competition was held at the Culinary Arena in Barbados during the annual cooking competition and conference last week.

The Champions of the SLHTA Chefs in Schools Cook Off Competition 2016, Megan Felicien and Micheala Poleon students from the Ciceron Secondary School, represented Saint Lucia at the Event.  The Junior Duelling Conference under the theme  "Celebrating Culture through Caribbean Cuisine"  gives participants exposure to, and knowledge on industry standards. Coconut Bay Football Team aims for gold in 2016 SLHTA National Football Competition

Meeting of Small Properties of the SLHTA
On Thursday 25th August 2016, the small hotel members of the SLHTA met to discuss a number of outstanding matters as it relates to Hidden Gems.  Small hotel members of the SLHTA have branded themselves as the Hidden Gems of Saint Lucia and convenes regular meetings of the group.

Discussions focused on ideas for boosting the visibility of the brand through marketing initiatives, and other relates matters affecting small properties.

The discussions were Chaired by Ms. Cheryl Skeete, Representative on the SLHTA Board of Directors for Small Properties and also attended by SLHTA COO Mr. Roderick Cherry.
SLHTA Offers Free Beginners Spanish Classes - Register Now
This is a result of a collaboration between SLHTA, the Embassy of Mexico and the University Of Quintana Roo Mexico. The SLHTA will now offer 3 levels of Spanish language training;

Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Courses.

SLHTA Environment Committee - Energy Reduction
In doing our part to reduce the carbon footprint on the island Bay Gardens Resorts and Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort have joined forces in launching an energy reduction campaign trying to lower operating cost and in turn fighting climate change. 

This campaign will be focus on getting team members involved in reducing kwh not just in the workplace but also at home.
Therefore, the SLHTA Environment Committee would like to encourage Head of Departments to share with their team members how Climate Change can have a devastating effect on the industry if measures are not taken now:
  • sea level rise
  • increase sea surface temperature
  • beachfront property infrastructure damage
  • frequent and more intense  storms and hurricanes
  • loss of beaches
  • loss of coral reefs
We all know the results of these impacts the timing for this campaign is great our next green globe audit for re-certification is upon us,

Properties are also encouraged to conduct site inspections of their respective properties to ensure that everything is being done to save cost and by extension saving the environment.
Virtual Agricultural Clearing House Feature - Francis Elibox
Many people may look at farming as a job but VACH's entrepreneur of the week Mr. Francis Elibox sees Agriculture as a lucrative business which has made him the successful businessman he is today.

Mr. Elibox, after being involved primarily in banana farming for over 35 years realized the down turn of the banana industry. He knew he could no longer depend on bananas as his main source of income and sort to diversify into other crops. Mr. Elibox has now diversified into watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew, tomatoes, cucumbers, papaya and bell pepper cultivation. Since this was a new venture for him he has sort to employ workers with more experience  in these crops and to date has seven (7) persons employed on the farm. He has also invested in green houses to help  ensure the survival of his crops against harsh weather conditions, insects and other environmental factors.

Today Mr. Elibox can now say he has some of the best melons on island.

SLHTA Environment Committee visits Sugar Beach A Viceroy Resort
On Thursday 18th August the SLHTA environmental team co-chaired by Carl hunter went on a property tour of the Sugar Beach Resort. Sugar beach has been working on 4 specific environmental initiatives namely:

Waste reduction - Sugar Beach has partnered with a local pig farmer who comes daily early in the morning to sort and collect all food waste. This in turn reduces significantly the waste that needs to be taken to the landfill in addition to benefiting a local farmer. This collaboration is commendable and at no cost provides a win-win for the resort and the community.
