Rector's Reflections
Freed-From and For

Deuteronomy 30:15-20 - Walk in the way of life and hold fast to God
Psalm 1 - They are like trees planted by streams of water.  (Ps. 1:3)
Philemon 1-21 - Paul says: Receive Onesimus as a coworker
Luke 14:25-33 - Jesus says: Disciples, give up your possessions and carry the cross

Freedom flows through all the readings for Sunday. Moses reminds the people of Israel they have the freedom to choose between life and prosperity or death and adversity. Ironically, this freedom to choose life comes through the freedom to choose obedience to the commands of God. In other words, Moses tells the people, they are free to choose bondage to God and life or bondage to sin and death. Either way they will be bound to something.

In the second reading Paul reminds Philemon that he-Paul-is not free but is a "prisoner of Christ Jesus." This is Paul's linguistic wordplay to help convince Philemon to free his slave Onesimus. Paul reminds Philemon that he has the freedom to hold on to his slave Onesimus and the freedom to grant Onesimus freedom as his brother in Christ.

In the gospel Jesus speaks a challenging word, which resonates in ways that might make modern people a tad uncomfortable. You might phrase it: Do you own your stuff or does your stuff own you? Jesus seems to suggest that our stuff, our possessions, could make it difficult to follow faithfully. It is easy to dismiss this suggestion with a wave of the hand, "Oh, that certainly is not me"-until you start to consider just how much stuff is stored up in our homes and attics and garages (some of the latter with no room for cars). [ Sundays and Seasons 2016 ]

For Jesus followers, freedom comes from letting go. Freedom comes through giving away and trusting Jesus. Because of Jesus we are free people. Free to choose life, free to choose faithfulness, and free to open our arms wide and receive the free grace of God. This is the God who chooses to never stop loving us. This is the God who created and continues to create, the God who redeemed and continues to redeem, and the God who sustained and continues to sustain you and me.

Freed-From and For Following Jesus Together,
Bill+

P.S. If you are planning on being officially be received as a member of All Saints' next week during worship when Bishop Rob is here, please let me know by Monday. Thanks!
Donations to Louisiana Flood Victims
At their August meeting, Vestry members approved the recommendation of the Mission/Outreach Team to donate $1,000 to flood victims in Louisiana. The donation will be channeled through ERD, Episcopal Relief & Development. The monies will be spent in the most needy areas as soon as possible.

The devastation in Louisiana is overwhelming. This is an opportunity for All Sainters to make a difference and help ERD bring much-needed supplies and compassionate support to people in the Gulf Coast. Please go to  www.episcopalrelief.org for information if your wish to make a personal donation. Or you may mail a check to:

            Episcopal Relief & Development
            P O Box 7058
            Merrifield VA 22116-7058

Please put US Disaster Relief/Louisiana Flooding in the memo line.

Our Mission/Outreach Team is committed to using the Mission Fund to reach out to local, national, international and Sustainability for the Future causes. We appreciate your support and ask that you join us in Spreading the Word through sharing our Time, Talent and Treasure.

Baptism

Sunday we welcomed twins  Marguarite Lincoln Whitridge and Olivia Connors Whitridge , daughters of Andrew and Catrina Whitridge to the waters of Holy Baptism during worship at 10:00 am. Photo thanks to Phil Wasmuth.
Take a Look at the Roof!
Frase Electric  has installed panels on the southeast (side) roof and if there are no other conflicts they will start the southwest (front) roof on Friday. There will be staging set up in front of the church for the long weekend.

God of light and love, keep the workers safe as they install our photovoltaic array. May these panels provide energy for your church and inspire others to care for the creation you have entrusted to us. Amen
Officially Becoming an "All Sainter"
Perhaps you have been connected with this faith community for a few months or for many years. Perhaps you've always wondered about becoming an official "All Sainter" with your connection recorded in church records and have the ability to vote during parish meetings. Perhaps you've wondered why Episcopalians are vague about membership. If you've wondered about any of these things or desire to officially become an "All Sainter", please contact the rector. We will hold an official welcoming during the Bishop's Visit, September 11th.
Fair Chair 2017 Search
A committee of recent summer fair chairs is searching for summer fair leaders for 2017. The leaders do not need to be spouses, or even close friends. The fair chairs have met and talked about the terrific experiences that each experienced. Some of the experiences were transformative. Over the next several weeks we'll publish in the eNews statements from past fair chairs.

This week Harry Liedtke relates experiences from 2014, when he and Pam chaired the fair.

Please give leading the fair prayerful consideration. Past fair chairs have pledged to be with the leaders on this journey, and will provide help and guidance each step of the journey.

Sincerely,
Phil Wasmuth
Summer Fair Co-chairs selection committee

When Pam and I were initially asked to chair the Church Fair 2014 my gut reaction was to decline as I did not feel qualified nor did I see myself as truly belonging. I saw myself as an outsider. Pam clearly stated that this was my decision and that she would support my decision either way.
Out of a sense of obligation I decided to bite the bullet and accept the job. The church had been good to us as a family and I wanted to pay off my debt. Once I got involved, I began to realize that my dealings with a variety of people inside and outside the church brought a lot of joy and that was totally unexpected to me.

Outside a few administrative matters I did very little until June came around. Then I started to talk to donors, department heads at the church, service providers, etc.  Instead of being a chore that could not be avoided, I was looking forward to these interactions. I met so many interesting people, learned a lot from them and made friends for life.

This experience was totally different from what I expected. Seeing literally hundreds of volunteers pitch together making this a success provides such a great "high". Having had this experience made me a much more tolerant person. Today I feel that I belong to this church.  I am grateful for having had this experience.

A Season of Thankfulness
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
Bishop Rob reminds us "when Jesus identifies himself with a grapevine and God the Father as the vinedresser, he's not talking about making grapes.  He's talking about the resilient, relentlessly outstretching, and healthy life that God longs for all of us." With Jesus as the vine, we are the branches that are connected to God and one another. We grow and produce good fruit through our life together for one another and for the sake of the world.

During the coming weeks, we will be focusing on the abundant leaves of blessing, the gifts we are given and give thanks for. Your worship bulletin will contain a green leaf of thanksgiving each week for you to share a blessing you are thankful for and place in the offering plate. We will share some of the blessings in worship and visually connect them to an ever growing vine of interconnectedness. The leaders of All Saints' hope the growing display of our abundant blessing moves us to recognize more and more the many ways we are blessed.
