A French Triumph at Cannes

The coveted Palme d'Or and more!

The Feature Film Jury jury for the 68th annual Cannes film festival, presided by American directors Joel and Ethan Coen, awarded the Palme d'Or to Jacques Audiard for his latest film, Dheepan. While the director is a regular at the festival, with recent movies such as A Prophet (2009) and Rust and Bone (2012), this is his first time he has won the top prize. On winning the award, Audiard said, "To receive a prize from the Coen brothers is something pretty exceptional. I'm very touched."

Vincent Lindon was visibly moved upon winning Best Actor for his role in The Measure of a Man (La Loi du march?). He starred in three films screened at Focus on French Cinema, including the Opening Night film in 2005, Chaos, as well Moon Child (La Permission de minuit) and Pater, both in 2012.

Emmanuelle Bercot shared the Best Actress award (with Rooney Mara, Carol) for her performance in Mon Roi, by Ma?wenn. The actress was also the director of the Opening Night movie Standing Tall (La T?te haute),  which was lauded by critics in the out of competition category - and is currently doing well at the box office in France...

Arnaud Desplechin also won the Best Screenplay award in the Directors Fortnight selection, for My Golden Days (Trois souvenirs de ma jeunesse), which was seen by many as a true gem that should have been in competition in the official selection.  Desplechin's Kings & Queen (Rois et reinewas featured at Focus on French Cinema in 2006.
