SHARING THE MINISTRY

Mission Statement

Before I became a teaching elder, I was a ruling elder serving on a session in Chicago. Our church had several old pianos throughout the building. They were out of tune and one-hard-push from falling apart. I asked why we had so many pianos? This church is known for its music, so whenever someone had an old piano, they donated it to the church!

What does an old, out of tune piano have to do with ministry? Maybe something, or maybe nothing at all. The only way to know is to ask, "What is the mission of our congregation?" Only then can the church determine if the piano is an opportunity or a distraction.

When any organization embarks down the path of a decision that is disconnected from its mission or vision statement, the organization will drift. Instead of being a place with a goal and a certain destination, it will become content with whatever happens, even if the results have nothing to do with its purpose or mission.

In the book "Doing the Math of Mission" Gil Rendle writes, "The local congregation must be able to describe the intended change that they believe they are called to produce, so they can talk about whether or not they're moving towards a goal."

It all comes back to mission and vision.

The mission statement should describe what that change looks like. It should be an expression of God's dream for the congregation. The mission statement of the church is the North Star which the session uses to determine if they are on the right course in their programing, hiring, building, and finances.

As a congregation, we cannot do everything. We are limited in time, resources, and talents. The mission statement is the diviner that helps us to know if we are being given an opportunity to promote the gospel, or a distraction from the goal and calling of the congregation.

What does the mission statement of your church say? How have you used it? Does it need to be changed? Does the committee structure throughout the church line up with it, or are you in need of a tuneup?
