COMMUNICATIONS

A Word from Donna Holmes

Hello, Fresh Impressions readers. I am Donna Holmes, the Presbytery of Milwaukee's Communications Associate. It is my pleasure to share articles with you, with the hope of building a more informed and more connected presbytery.

Chris and I share Fresh Impressions responsibilities. She posts the news; I seek the news. Please continue to send information and announcements to Chris, but please share possible article topics with me. I will soon be crafting an editorial calendar to schedule articles and topics and dates for publication. This will allow all of us more time to write and plan our articles. I am beginning a series of biographies on people in the presbytery; look for the first publication very soon. I'm hoping to get to know all of you better via interviews. I look forward to capturing and sharing your thoughts and accomplishments with others in the presbytery, so all of us can know how capable and diverse our presbytery truly is.

As you know, Craig  writes regularly for Fresh Impressions. I have enjoyed his courageous viewpoints in past editions. Now that I am here, he will  publish the second and third Wednesdays of each month. So please look for his inspiring words then.

We are glad that you are reading! Thank you. I will be reaching out to you for news that is happening in your ministry context. If you have questions or comments please contact me at [email protected]. Happy reading!

COMMON GROUND'S BRAND OF SOCIAL JUSTICE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL

Compiled by Communications Associate Donna Holmes (Have a story to submit? Contact Donna at [email protected])

I attended my first Common Ground event on April 1, 2015, at City Hall, Milwaukee. It was a press conference specific to Mayor Barrett's meeting with Nationstar Mortgage, scheduled for later that day. The specific issue to be discussed involved the Sherman Park area of the city, where Nationstar's foreclosures have caused urban blight.  The Common Ground initiative, Milwaukee Rising, has an ongoing campaign in the area, and this press conference announced some of their concerns for the way Nationstar is handling the foreclosures and the negative effect on the Sherman Park region. Common Ground representatives presented their case cogently, with strong speakers and articulate witnesses. I was familiar with Common Ground through their involvement at my church, and I knew they were... (Read More)

BECOME AN EARTH CARE CONGREGATION

Did you know that the PCUSA has a guide and certificate for greening our churches? We sure do! Earth Care Congregations are congregations that have pledged to commit themselves to accomplishing a specific number of actions toward caring for God's creation. The Mission Partnership committee of our presbytery would like to encourage you to explore in depth what an Earth Care Congregation is and does by visiting the website pcusa.org/environment

Mission Partnerships will provide $500 to the first ten congregations that apply.  Money is to be used as seed funds towards becoming a "Green"  church.  Application for this one time grant can be made by letter outlining the congregations goals for becoming a "Green"  church and signed by the Clerk of Session.

SATURDAY SEMINAR AT IMMANUEL CHURCH
"Encountering God in Tyrannical Texts"
 May 2  1:00-4:00 p.m.
Professor Frances Taylor Gench
Professor of Biblical Interpretation,  Union Presbyterian Seminary  Richmond, Va.

The Bible is full of embarrassing, offensive, problematic texts that present serious interpretive challenges for contemporary Christian faith and practice.  Should they be repudiated?  Discarded?  Silenced?  Or are there more effective and faithful ways of handling them? The seminar will tackle the importance of engaging difficult texts directly, with the expectation that we may encounter the living God in our conversation with them.  It will provide the opportunity to wrestle with such texts, to consider interpretive strategies for engaging them with integrity, and to reflect on the authority of Scripture.  Frances Taylor Gench is one of the preeminent Biblical scholars in the US today. Contact the Immanuel Church office (414-276-4757, [email protected]) or click here to register and to order a copy of the book.
