SHARING THE MINISTRY

Tweet Tweet!

The upcoming Presbytery meeting on Saturday at Immanuel in Milwaukee has many exciting items on the agenda. We will be voting on constitutional amendments, approving the 2015 budget, receiving new committee members and electing a Stated Clerk and Treasurer, hearing about an exciting mission partnership opportunity with Common Ground, and examining Beth Patton for ordination. What a full and exciting agenda!

In addition we will feature a new way of experiencing presbytery. For the first time, we will be able to have live tweets (140 characters or less) of the meeting (#pbymke). This means that Presbyterians, and those interested in Presbyterians will be able to read and respond to what we do in our business session, workshop, and worship. They will participate in our learning from J. Herbert Nelson, and be inspired by our worship, just as we are learning and being inspired. Twitter means that what happens in Milwaukee can become a national conversation- instantly.

Nicole Farley, the chair of our Leadership Development Task Force, came up with the Twitter idea. However, we are not the first presbytery to move in this direction. Presbytery of Chicago already has a twitter feed. The Presbytery Mission Agency, our head denomination, is looking into having a twitter feed and Facebook post during the national meeting in 2016. Twitter is a powerful medium because the information flows in two directions: from the individual user to the community, and from the presbytery to the community. Through twitter, we can create ideas today that will be tomorrow's innovation.

The ability to tweet is on the heels of our first webcast from last week. It was exciting learning about the technology, and to be able to have a meeting across five counties without everyone driving into one location. New technology can be fun and frustrating. The webcast was not perfect, but the idea opens doors for many possibilities including satellite meetings and distant training and education.

I have a message on my whiteboard in my office. It reads, "Create a presbytery that will lay the foundation for the future church." I believe the future church will have technology in its bloodstream. We will be able to conquer geographic limitations, hear and explore new idea as they occur, and attract people who respond to our message of hope, faith, love and possibility. As it is written, "But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without a tweet or blog?" (CHV- Craig Howard Version).

DISCOVERY DAY - FEBRUARY 21, 2015

The Milwaukee Presbytery's 2015 Discovery Day will be held on Saturday, February 21st at Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Mequon from 9:00am to 4:00pm in conjunction with the February Presbytery Meeting. The theme for the day will be "Communicating Faith in the 21st Century." Registration will soon be available.

Setup help - This year, we are asking churches in the Milwaukee Presbytery, especially those in closer proximity to Crossroads Presbyterian Church, to help with the setup for Discovery Day. Our brothers and sisters at Crossroads graciously provide their facility for the event, but we need help during the event as well as both preparing for and cleaning up after the event. Setup will begin on Friday, February 20th at 9:00am and will end when setup is complete. We ask that all those who are able to help come in the morning at a time that works best for you. Following the event, help is also needed to restore the building ahead of Sunday worship. Many hands make light work! Click here to volunteer

Appeals Court Ruling Preserves Clergy Housing Exemption - A federal appeals court has thrown out a lower court ruling that the federal income tax exemption for clergy housing allowances is unconstitutional. The appeals court directed the U.S. District Court in Wisconsin that ruled on the suit November 21, 2013, to dismiss the complaint.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit ruled on November 13, 2014, that the plaintiffs lacked standing to challenge the constitutionality of Section 107 of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides the exemption. The Freedom from Religion Foundation and two individuals filed the suit. The appeals court did not address the constitutionality of Section 107.
