PRESBYTERY MEETING RECAP

Someone went home with a men's greyish brown London Fog trench coat with belt that belongs to someone else, and left their similar looking trench coat behind.  Please contact the Presbytery office 414-292-2740 or [email protected] if you are that person, and we will make the switch.  Thanks!

SHARING THE MINISTRY

Our Children

"My son was my dream. My dream has been killed." Father of Pakistani youth.

The massacre of 131 students in a Pakistani school has placed a shadow over my heart, and a gloom in the "holly, jolly Christmas" season. The gift and bane of global media has enabled us to experience the shock and horror with an immediacy and palpable reality. As Americans, we can list the differences between our culture and that of Pakistan. From our religion to our foods; geography to lifestyle, we are very different nations.

But we all love our children.

During the Christmas season we exchange gifts as we show our appreciation and love for one another. Yet our children remain our primary focus during the season. We have children programs at church, watch holiday specials featuring Ralphie and a young Natalie Woods. We have angel trees and Toy Stores in hopes that every child receives a gift no matter what their economic status. We want to see our children light-up with joy, and watch them play and experience patience rewarded, and dreams come true.

In Pakistan 131 children were massacred. They watched their fellow students shot and bloodied. They heard the screams and lived the horror. The school principal demanded the attackers shoot her instead of the children. Her body was riddled with over 50 bullets.

The promises of revenge have already been made. The prohibition of the death penalty has been removed. I'm sure the storied torture chambers of Pakistan are going full force.

Can we find the words to pray? Can we connect to the pain and sorrow of the parents, grand-parents, wounded students, and a nation that has been rocked by this violence, and pray? Can we take a moment and realize the meaningless deaths in nations all over the world and pray? Can we find the faith to pray for our enemies and believe the prophet who said:

They shall beat their swords into plowshares,

and their spears into pruning hooks;

nation shall not lift up sword against nation,

neither shall they learn war any more?

Setup help - This year, we are asking churches in the Milwaukee Presbytery, especially those in closer proximity to Crossroads Presbyterian Church, to help with the setup for Discovery Day. Setup will begin on Friday, February 20th at 9:00am and will end when setup is complete. We ask that all those who are able to help come in the morning at a time that works best for you. Following the event, help is also needed to restore the building ahead of Sunday worship. Many hands make light work! Click here to volunteer

=============================

Longest Night/Blue Christmas - Called The Longest Night, this service, which is sometimes also referred to as a "Blue Christmas," is a way of recognizing that in the midst of what is a celebratory time for many people, for others, the emotions elicited by this season are more difficult
and complex. Not everyone is up and cheery for the Christmas holidays. Dealing with the death of a loved one, facing life after divorce or separation, coping with the loss of a job, living with cancer, and a number of other human situations make parties and joviality painful for many people in our congregations and communities. With simple hymns, prayers, readings and scripture, participants are invited to come together, be where they are, and feel what they feel, knowing that in the midst of their struggles, they are not alone. We will observe Holy Communion and all who seek the grace that God alone provides are welcome to partake.

Sussex United Methodist, Lisbon Presbyterian and St. John's UCC of Merton churches' combined service on Sunday, December 21 at 4:00 at Sussex UMC (N63 W23523 Main Street) will create a sacred space for people living through dark times. Any who are struggling with loss of any kind this season are invited and encouraged to attend.
