SEPTEMBER PRESBYTERY MEETING
Thanks to everyone who made our Saturday presbytery meeting at Carroll University a success!  Thanks to Rodger Nishioka who inspired us to think differently about how to engage young adults.

An offering of $572.75 was collected for the Unaccompanied Minor and Border Crisis Fund of the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Agency.  Thank you!

We have a presbytery meeting survey for everyone to fill out.  This survey has some questions for those that were unable to attend, so please take a few minutes to take it, even if you weren't there!

GHANA DELEGATION VISIT

Our visit from our partnership friends of the Dangme-Tongu Presbytery in Ghana is coming to a close. Rev. Stephen Tetteh, Catechist Mercy Fiorgbor, Rev. James Adjokaste and Rev. Fred Appertey will be departing tomorrow, Thursday September 25th.   They began their visit with churches and events in the Rock County area. Following that they were hosted in Waukesha and surrounding areas. For the last portion of their visit, they were hosted in the Wauwatosa area with connections to churches in the Milwaukee area. Special thanks to the Ghana Partnership committee for all their hard work to make this happen!! Thanks to the churches that hosted!  Because of your willingness to help, you made this partnership truly a Presbytery wide effort!

 THE PARKING LOT

The Confirmation Project seeks to learn the extent to which confirmation and equivalent practices (CEP) in five Protestant denominations in the United States are effective for strengthening discipleship in youth. Strengthening discipleship includes nurturing faith in Jesus Christ and facilitating youth encounters with Christian traditions (Scripture, creeds, confessions, and practices) to support lifelong Christian vocation. The five denominations in this project include: the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the United Methodist Church. This project is funded by the Lilly Foundation, Inc. and seeks to provide ministry leaders within the Christian church examples of strategies and practices that are effective in helping young Christians grow as disciples of Jesus Christ.  Churches in the PC(USA) will receive an e-mail link to our confirmation survey on October 1, 2014. By taking the time to fill out the survey, you can help them better understand the depth, breadth, and effectiveness of confirmation and equivalent practices in the PC(USA). They look forward to learning from you and your ministry! To learn more, visit their website.

SHARING THE MINISTRY

We Can Do This

I am inspired after Saturday's presbytery meeting. I am inspired by the passion of Bob Bardin for integrity, of Michelle Henrichs for the scriptures, and the passion of Nikki Blanks for young people. Christian Boyd led worship with energy and creativity. Our keynote presenter and speaker, Rodger Nishioka reminded us that we can have congregations that reach out to young adults in our community, and that we are authentically relational. "We can do this! We are built for this!"

Fall is the time when congregations assess the previous year, and prepare for what God is calling them to do in 2015. They are gearing up our Christian Education programs, deciding our stewardship goals, opening worship calendars, and spiffing up the buildings and grounds of their churches. My question is, how many of us are setting goals? How many people do we want in the Sunday School? How many visitors do we want to grace our worship services? What do we want our membership rolls to look like at the end of the year? How much income do we want to raise in offerings, pledges, and tithes?

Many of our leaders are uncomfortable with setting goals. Although we have goals at work, at home, and even for our health, when it comes to the church, goal setting is often absent. Perhaps it is because we believe God will provide what we need. Or perhaps we think goals are too carnal or secular and have no place in the church. Setting goals in the church may seem impossible because we cannot control all of the variables; we cannot determine what people will or will not do.

I wonder if our resistance to goal setting is based on fear: we are afraid we will not achieve them. We are afraid we are going to fail.

The presbytery meeting gave me a glimpse of what it will take for us to have the courage to set goals, and achieve them. It will take individuals with passion. It will take leaders with vision who believe we can achieve what we strategically plan to do. It will take members who buy into the mission of the congregation, and are committed to giving their resources- time, talent, and treasure, to achieve that mission.

"People need a vision big enough to matter and small enough to achieve."

Pastors, we can do this! Sessions, we are built for this! Members, you have the passion to invite, engage, and connect people with your congregation!

May the Holy Spirit lead and guide each of our congregations as they plan with faith for 2015.

THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION MONTH
During this month which includes Theological Education / Seminary Sunday, the Committee on Preparation for Ministry provides resources to encourage congregations to support the Rev. Dr. Margaret E. Towner Scholarship fund and to inform the presbytery about what the process toward ordination looks like in our presbytery.  Please consider using each of the  bulletin inserts created for the four weeks in September to help raise funding for the scholarship and support for our inquirers and candidates in the presbytery.  Congregations who have supported seminarians might consider "Theological Education Month" an opportunity to celebrate their own seminary students!  Inserts are also accessible on our website (Forms and Documents: Committee on Preparation for Ministry).
