| Meet the Groomer | |
Meet the Traveling Man! |
Have you noticed that the guy who's grooming at Kincaid looks a lot like one of the Junior Nordic coaches? That's because they are one in the same. Meet John Hemmeter. This guy gets around!
John grew up south of Cleveland, Ohio and spent his childhood traveling and camping. By the time he was in high school he had been to all of the lower 48 states. After college at Kent State he headed west, first to Colorado as a ski bum and then to Montana. Like many of us, he came to Alaska for "a summer". That was 14 years ago.
John started off working in Denali, and then moved to Valdez, where he spent 7 years guiding multi-sport adventures - kayaking, back country fly in trips, and climbing. This is John's 4th winter in Anchorage. A while back he decided to become a "land lubber," and bought a house here.
John has had some seriously cool adventures. He's climbed Denali, in the Brooks Range and in Nepal. He taken several extended bike trips: 8000 km through SE Asia, a 6000 km trek around Australia and yet another trip through SW China. Future bike trips? Maybe the Silk Road or Lhasa to Kathmandu. Did we mention he gets around?
These days he's hanging closer to home. Working for NSAA, fixing up his house, mountain biking, backcountry skiing, kayaking, and a little bit of ice climbing thrown in. Another pastime, brewing his favorite beer - IPA made with water from a secret location along the Seward Highway.
Why We Like John:
John does everything! Not only is he an excellent groomer, but he's involved with just about everything that NSAA does. He handles event coordination details for NSAA's operations department. He gets things where they need to be. He's great with education and is keenly interested in keeping the public informed of the hows, whys and whens of grooming.
In his "spare time" he coaches Junior Nordic (he's the head Polar Cub coach at Kincaid), works with Title 1 school ski programs and is one of the key organizers of Ski 4 Kids. Little known fact: he designed the last three Ski 4 Kids posters. We think he sleeps, but we haven't confirmed that yet.
Q: What is your favorite type of snow to groom?
A: When it actually does snow! I like working for NSAA because I believe in what we do, and think it's a good thing to be involved in: it's good for the community, bringing people together and promoting healthy living.

| Ask the Groomer | |
Q: Where can I get the most updated grooming information? When and how is it updated? Signed, Early Riser
A: Dear ER, The NSAA is continually working not just on improving our trails, but on improving our communication. The short answer is that the most up-to-date information can be found on the grooming page of our website ( here) and on the CCAK Trail Forum ( here). We also have a telephone hotline (248-6667) were the website information is repeated. Here's how it works: The NSAA administrative office has the task of gathering the grooming data from our operations staff and sharing it with the public. Keeping track of the latest information is no easy task. NSAA has multiple folks maintaining seven major Nordic ski areas - Kincaid, Hillside/Far North Bicentennial Park, APU, Eagle River High School, Beach Lake/Chugiak HS, Bartlett HS, and Edmonds Lake/MLMS.
When our groomers have completed their evening or daytime groom, they call into the NSAA office and leave a sometimes brief and sometimes detailed message of which trails were groomed, whether new tracks were set and their opinion of the quality of groom. If there is reliable cell reception we often get calls in mid-groom "Hi, this is Tom, finished the Spencer with new tracks - headed to the lighted loops. Will call again in a couple of hours". Sometimes it will be a 3 a.m. exhausted voice leaving the brief message.
When the admin office opens at 10am we transcribe the associated messages onto our daily grooming log, download the grooming page off our FTP website, edit the page with accurate, witty reporting of current conditions, upload the page back to our website, then double check the data on the web. At this point we will update the grooming telephone hotline (using a 12 step process) by reading the web page into the phone. During the day if groomers call in with updates we will repeat the process (sometimes 2 or 3 times). It takes 20-30 minutes to take each report, log in to and change the website, then change the hotline. That is, if we're not interrupted. As much as we'd like to think we're single minded in our pursuit of updating grooming reports on a timely basis, sadly, we often have other urgent items on our plate, such as supporters dropping by the office, race registrants calling with questions, Junior Nordic parents needing assistance with registration, High School and Middle School race organization issues, Ski Train questions, ringing phones, and other minor emergencies. Our goal is to have everything updated by noon and again by 5pm if there are any afternoon changes.
Another great source of trail conditions is the CCAK Trail Forum (here). This is skis-on-the-ground reporting of various areas around the state. If you haven't seen it or shared information there you should.
You'll be happy to know that new this year, one of our three office staff is assigned to update the website and hotline each weekend. We've been doing our best to put the weekend plans aside until after the reports are updated. We hope you've noticed a difference!
