Youth Leaders Get Fresno State Game Day Experience

Thanks to a new partnership with Valley First Credit Union and Fresno State Athletics, youth leaders from Fresno Boys and Men of Color and Women Empowered - the youth leadership components of Fresno Building Healthy Communities - got a glimpse of the college experience by attending last week's Freso State football game against University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as part of Valley First Credit Union's Community Corner.

More than 50 youth were treated to dinner and a special tailgate reception where they were welcomed by Fresno State Director of Athletics Jim Barko. At the top of the second quarter, a few youth and adult allies went down to the field where they were recognized for their leadership in the community. After, the youth joined other fans in the red wave where they cheered Fresno State to victory - the Bulldogs beat the UNLV Rebels 31-28.

Painting and Paletas! Community Leaders Give Back to Local Good Business paletas

Thanks to the hard work of more than 75 volunteers, La Reina de Michoacan Palateria y Neveria got some much needed improvements at Fresno Building Healthy Communities' Community Action Day.

Local leaders working with Fresno Building Healthy Communities partners voted and selected La Reina de Michoacan as a local good business doing great things in the community.

Volunteers worked together to help the good business by painting, cleaning, and picking up trash. Volunteers didn't leave empty handed - La Reina de Michoacan gave each volunteer a complimentary paleta or cup of ice cream thanking them for their help.

City of Fresno Should #InvestInParks and Develop 49 Acres in South Fresno  acres

Parks improve community health, safety, education and the economy. In fact, neighborhood parks increase home property values by almost 15%. So why is the city of Fresno shying away from building a park near Peach and Butler in southeast Fresno?

"City of Fresno could lose 49 acres for proposed park"
(KFSN - ABC 30)

Since 2006, the city of Fresno has had a golden opportunity to develop 49 acres of land into a park that is needed in this community. However, in a letter from the National Park Service, the city could be forced to give the free land back to the government unless it complies within 90 days and comes up with a plan to develop the land into a park.

Can Fresno Be Poverty Free? A discussion on Valley Public Radio's Valley Edition

There's no doubt central, southeast and southwest Fresno face the highest rates of poverty in the city. But the only way our city can get out of our poverty crisis is by improving the health of our communities by creating more and better parks in areas that need them most, investing and improving our neighborhoods, and creating a community where everyone can thrive and succeed.

In this week's Valley Edition, Sher Moua of Fresno Center for New Americans a panel to discuss poverty on Valley Public Radio's Valley Edition.

Unlocking the Potential of Community Benefits in the Central Valley

Local health advocates, residents and hospital representatives came together to discuss how local nonprofit hospitals can  help create #OneHealthyFresno at the Unlocking the Potential of Community Benefits.

The forum kicked-off with a presentation from The Greenlining Institute about the obligation nonprofit hospitals have to invest in the community. Nonprofit hospitals across California are exempted from paying billions in taxes, but are required to invest in the health of their communities via "community benefits". The Greenlining Institute presented a summary of their findings about where local hospital dollars go.

A panel later shared the impact of community benefits in the central valley via examples of programs funded that support community health and also needs for additional investments that can help create community health outside of the doctor's office.

Finally, Yvonne Der Torosian, Regional Vice President of Hospital Council of Northern & Central California provided an overview of how hospitals determine where investment will go. Currently the Hospital Council is conducting community surveys to identify needs and opportunities in local communities. A Community Needs Assessment is conducted every three years to help guide each hospital's community benefits program.

Take Action!   Take the Community Needs Health Asessement and provide your input about what improvements you would like to see in your neighborhood, school, and how hospitals can help your community be healthier with prevention! If the pre-populated answers do not reflect your thoughts, simply write in your comments!
