SEEING LIFE

A traveller once came upon a rocky outcropping
in southern France and saw a mass of golden blooms
clinging to a dry ruin,
and in the scree of the Cascade Mountains
saw lupine spring up from desolation.
Often life appears in surprising places
rocky crags
stony slopes
rock-hewn tombs.

We would do well to remember this.
