Over the last couple of weeks, Ms. North’s Literature class has been reading
Breaking Through, the true story by Francisco Jiménez who came illegally to the U.S. from Mexico with his parents.
Last week, students got a chance to hear first-hand from Martín, one of “The Dreamers”, about his experiences of coming to the U.S. with his parents illegally when he was 12 years old. He described how he swam across the Rio Grande with his sister and his father, and how he made his way to Minnesota, where his parents already lived and worked in the fields and eventually a turkey processing plant. Martín talked about the challenges he faced in learning English, just like many of our students. He also shared the stress of not knowing what his status will be with DACA, or The Dream Act, but is hopeful that he will be allowed to continue to work and live in the US.
