The Art of the Florida Highwaymen

Exhibit Hours: 10:00AM to 4PM
From 2 Feb 2017 to 28 Feb 2017
Additional Hours by Appointment Only

Now nationally known, the Highwaymen began as a group of African American artists who, against all odds, managed to prosper by selling their paintings in the segregated South of the 1950s and 1960s. One charismatic man dreamed big and developed a fast method of painting that he generously shared with 25 others, and they collectively produced more than 200,000 paintings over a 30 year period. Visitors learn their fascinating story, told through examples of their breathtaking paintings. They painted from the early 1950's through the 1980's using vivid and bright colors to portray the beautiful Florida landscape. They painted from their garages and back yards on Upson board and then on the weekends they would travel and sell their paintings to hotels, offices, businesses and individuals who appreciated the artwork.

"The paintings are beautiful and represent 26 different artists. The significance of the exhibit doesn't fully rest in the beauty and quality of rendering. The significance is in what this exhibit represents."
Brandy Elrod, Executive Director Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Arts Council
