A new face at the
Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Co.
Chamber of Commerce

The Fitzgerald-Ben Hill Co. Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce its recent hire of Maleny Avila. Maleny will be at the Chamber on Monday, Wednesday & Friday. She will be answering phone calls, general office work and working for our members.

She is currently attending Fitzgerald High school as a junior! She practically grew up in Fitzgerald and is in love with this small town and its community. She used to be an active member in FFA attending the meetings and helping with some of the fundraisers.

Though the school doesn't have a volleyball team it's still one of her favorite sports to make time for. Also, she has a huge passion for drawing and designing! It's one of her main hobbies to do during her free time. She is the eldest daughter of Jose Luis Avila and Fabiola Avila.

The Chamber looks forward to working with Maleny!

The General Assembly is considering HB61, legislation which would require online retailers with at least $250,000 or 200 retail sales a year in Georgia to collect and remit to the state sales taxes on purchases. Without this requirement in place, state and local governments are losing millions of dollars in tax revenues every year - a state fiscal analysis estimates that collecting those taxes could mean an extra $274 million in revenue for the state and $200 million for loc
al governments. Just as importantly, the lack of e-Fairness can have a devastating impact on small brick and mortar businesses in Georgia's cities. These businesses, the backbone of our cities, are often the victim of "show rooming," a practice where customers shop at a local store but buy online to avoid paying sales taxes. This practice results in approximately a 7 percent competitive price disadvantage to the online retailers who don't collect sales taxes.

Throughout the state, examples exist of local businesses being impacted by the tax disparity as a result of the e-Fairness issue. To support state legislative efforts to level the playing field for local retailers, GMA is seeking stories about or directly from business owners in in cities where this issue has been a factor in the decision to shutter their businesses. Your feedback and stories are critical to help GMA tell the story of how e-Fairness legislation can help your local shop owners.
