Gun permits steadily increase despite tougher controls

BOSTON — More than 100,000 new gun licenses were issued to Massachusetts residents over the past five years, even as the state tightened gun control laws.

Statewide, there were 397,548 active Class A firearms licenses — which allow the holder to own rifles, shotguns or handguns — as of Jan. 22, according to data obtained from the state Department of Criminal Justice Information Services.

That’s an increase of 135,432, or 51 percent, from five years ago.

Wallace said other factors may be behind the rise in gun permits, including a growing interest among women and young adults taking up shooting sports or arming themselves for protection.

“The fastest-growing demographic of gun owners is women, and we’re seeing that everywhere in training and gun safety programs,” he said.

Where is the outcry from the legislature for "public safety" now?
Falmouth man (felon) avoids jail on drug, firearms charges

FALMOUTH — An East Falmouth man accused of illegally possessing methamphetamine and firearms during a traffic stop in 2015 pleaded guilty Monday in Falmouth District Court to several of the charges against him. [snip]

In their report, officers said they saw an AK-47 assault rifle in the back of the vehicle and found Mase had a .40-caliber Glock 23 handgun in his waistband. They also found 37 rounds of .762-caliber ammunition to fit the AK-47, 26 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition to fit the Glock, 30-round and 40-round rifle magazines, brass knuckles, a switchblade, a scale, pipes and 4 grams of crystal methamphetamine, according to the police report.

For those charges he was sentenced to two years in prison. That sentence was suspended and Mase will be on probation until 2020.
Mase was found not responsible for a marked lanes violation and had the charges of a felon possessing a large capacity firearm and unlicensed possession of an assault weapon dismissed.

Public Hearing February 6, 2018
MassWildlife is proposing leash and waste disposal regulations for dogs on Wildlife Management Areas. A public hearing has been scheduled for February 6, 2018 at 7 p.m. at the MassWildlife Field Headquarters in Westborough.  For more information on the proposal and how to provide comment on this regulation proposal,  click here.

The proposed regulations require leashing dogs and other domestic animals and picking up dog waste on WMAs. Leashing dogs decreases conflicts with both people and other dogs, resulting in a safer and more positive experience for everyone. The Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) has a long tradition of welcoming dogs on Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), and dogs are still welcome on WMAs under this proposal.

EXCEPTIONS FOR HUNTERS WITH HUNTING DOGS: Under this proposal, licensed hunters may have their dogs off-leash when hunting or hunt-training, or if they are participating in retriever or bird dog trial events permitted by MassWildlife. They are also exempt from the dog waste removal requirement.

MassWildlife is making this proposal due to repeated complaints from WMA users about negative and unsafe encounters with unleashed dogs and issues with dog waste. MassWildlife protects and manages these areas to sustain wildlife abundance and diversity and to provide wildlife-related recreation, including hunting, fishing and wildlife-watching, while at the same time providing a safe and enjoyable outdoor experience for all visitors .
