Mass. House Speaker DeLeo Backing Effort To Tighten Access To Guns

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo says he’s hoping to revive a bill aimed at denying state gun licenses to anyone on a terrorist watch list or no-fly list.

DeLeo’s renewed interest in the stalled bill follows the June 12 shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, that left 49 people dead.

Opponents of similar proposals argue that individuals can be erroneously placed on the lists.

DeLeo said Wednesday that individuals who think they’re on the lists in error should get a hearing.

GOAL Blog: Should Terrorists Be Allowed To Vote?

June 23, 2016

By GOAL Executive Director Jim Wallace

Just two weeks following the most brutal terrorist attack since 9/11, our nation has spiraled into a shameless debate on reducing our civil rights. We citizens are quickly recognizing a pattern for how our national “leaders” deal with terrorist attacks on U.S. soil – deny and redirect.

When America woke up to the horrible news that we had been attacked at an Orlando night club and that many innocent people had lost their lives, lawful gun owners were already being set up to take the blame.  Before the victims’ families were officially notified, the narrative from many politicians and media outlets was about guns.

The Susan Collins Gun Control Amendment is a Nightmare For Innocent Americans

Earlier this week four different gun control bills were predictably voted down in the Senate. Now, as Matt has reported, Senators will vote on yet another piece of legislation introduced by Maine Republican Susan Collins.

"The bipartisan 'Terrorist Firearms Prevention Act of 2016' would prevent people who are on the No Fly List or the Selectee List from purchasing firearms. If our government has determined that an individual is too dangerous to fly on an airplane, that person should not have the opportunity make a legal firearm purchase," Collins office released yesterday in a white paper. "Due process principles require that Americans denied their right to purchase a firearm under this provision have the opportunity to appeal this denial to a federal court."

America Is Awash In Guns, And Crime Is At Record Lows

For the average American alive today the odds of being murdered have never been lower — even though Americans possess millions more firearms.

Most Americans believe America is submerged beneath a tidal wave of gun violence. A Pew Research poll in 2013 found that 56 percent of Americans thought gun violence had risen in the last 20 years, 26 percent thought it had remained the same, and only 12 percent thought it had fallen. You might be surprised to learn the 12 percent were right.

The gulf between the facts about guns and the public’s perception is immense, and was created deliberately. Anti-gun advocates invent new terms (“assault weapon”) and politicians lie to win over a skeptical public. Too often these myths are swallowed by journalists and celebrities who don’t bother to check the data and don’t know how modern firearms actually work.

New England Politicians React to the Gun Vote

The Senate voted down four gun control measures on Monday

On Monday afternoon the Senate voted down all four gun legislation measures.

Among the measures were a proposal to keep extremists from acquiring guns and another that would enhance the background checks required for purchasing firearms.

Many New England politicians released statements after the measures failed.

Massachusetts senator Elizabeth Warren tweeted "ashamed and disgusted that the Senate works for the NRA and not the majority of Americans who support basic solutions to stop gun violence."

GOAL Note: All of the "outraged" politicians quoted in this story had an opportunity to vote for increased funding for NICS (improved background checks) and for a 3 day wait period on a firearm purchase by a "suspected terrorist".

Instead they chose to vote along party lines, sling mud and accuse the "other side" of aiding and abetting terrorists.

Perhaps an all time low for Congress.

Amherst delays on gun-control group

AMHERST — While members of the Select Board support efforts to promote gun safety by extending background checks and punish those who traffic in illegal guns, a decision to endorse principles outlined by a national gun-control organization was put off Monday after questions were raised about joining Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

Following a nearly hour-long discussion, board members said they were not yet ready to act on a request from the town’s Board of Health to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a program of Everytown for Gun Safety.

Select Board member Andrew Steinberg said endorsing principles is different from becoming part of an organization whose activities and views may not fully be known.
