Bill seeks uniformity in gun laws

BOSTON -- Describing locally imposed restrictions in Massachusetts as threats to their constitutional rights, some gun owners have lined up behind a bill that would prevent municipalities from instituting their own ordinances around gun licensing.

"All we want is our rights," Lowell gun owner Arthur Perkins said during a hearing before the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security last week. "We don't want anything special. We're not asking for any other of the 32 steps that we go through to get a license to be taken away. We want the whimsy, we want the prejudice, we want the crazy beliefs to be taken away with. That is what this bill will do."

Legislation Update

Some good news regarding "outdoor" legislation.

The Sunday Hunting and Crossbow bills have both come out of committee with a favorable report following the public hearing a few months ago.

The Crossbow bill is now S.414 and is at the Senate Rules committee. The "Sunday Hunting" bill, known as S.415, "An Act expanding the powers of the director of Fisheries and Wildlife" is at the Senate Ways and Means Committee.

The success of both of these bills is due in large part to those who testified at the public hearing. We look forward to continued progress on these bills. Thanks to all for taking part in the process and thanks to the committee members for the favorable votes!

We will update as necessary when these bills move towards becoming law.
GOAL Alert:  Town of Lexington Voting To Ban Commonly Owned Firearms & Magazines

February 4, 2016 Update:

Town Meeting Members will be voting on the article without knowing what the actual language of  the law will be.

Here is the actual language of what is officially known as Article 34. (note, there are no details)

Article 34: AMEND GENERAL BYLAWS – GUNS
(Citizen Article)

To see if the Town will vote to amend Chapter 97 of the Code of the Town of Lexington (Public Conduct) by adding a new Section regulating the manufacture, sale and possession of firearms
within the Town, or act in any other manner in relation thereto.
(Inserted by Robert Rotberg and 9 or more registered voters)

DESCRIPTION: This article would prohibit the manufacture, sale, ownership, or
possession of assault weapons and high capacity ammunition magazines in the Town of Lexington.

More Information:

Lexington Town Meeting Member Robert Rotberg has initiated an attack on the Second Amendment.

Rotberg initiated a citizen's petition (article) modeled after the Highland Park IL gun ban. If passed, this article would ban many commonly owned firearms and magazines in the town of Lexington. Currently the town of Lexington has over 800 residents who are duly licensed to own firearms. Should this article become law it would affect an untold amount of firearms, which are currently legally owned.

To stop this article from becoming law, it must be voted down by Lexington's town meeting members at the Annual Town Meeting.

The annual town meeting is scheduled for March 21, 2016 at 7:30 PM in the Carey Memorial Building, 1605 Massachusetts Ave, Lexington, MA 02420.

Lexington residents need to contact their town meeting members and urge them to vote NO on Mr. Rotberg's article.

Take Action!

If you are a resident of Lexington, please contact your town meeting representative and urge them to vote NO on the Article 34.

See contact info for town meeting members below.

Plan on attending town meeting March 21, 2016 and speaking out against this attack on our Second Amendment.
