Next summer, the Aboriginal Sport and Wellness Council of Ontario (ASWCO) will host the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) from July 16 through July 23 in Toronto, Ontario. Lac du Flambeau youth will be competing in the games as part of Team Wisconsin.
NAIG provides Indigenous youth age 13-19 from Canada and 13 regions from the United States an opportunity to showcase their heritage through 14 different sports including archery, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, swimming and volleyball.
After a series of tryouts across the state this summer, youth representing Lac du Flambeau on Team Wisconsin include Stanlee Kmiecik (swimming), Tavian Doud (basketball), Lilith Schuman (basketball), William Stone, Jr. (basketball), Erin Allen (track and field), Kenadi Mayo (volleyball) and Kassandra Garcia (soccer).
Brook Kmiecik, Stanlee's mom, said, "Stanlee started swimming in his freshman year at LUHS. Stan was the only Native American on the team, and the only swimmer that started in every race. He's starting his senior year as one of the top tier swimmers on the team, and made Team Wisconsin based on his times."
Lilith Schuman, also a senior at LUHS, has a history of accomplishments in basketball. "Lilith has been playing basketball since she was three years old, and has traveled to Canada, Milwaukee and Australia as a competitor with Team Wisconsin. In the past she has brought home gold and bronze medals,"said Lisa Schuman, Lilith's mom.
