Forget kale, chia seeds and quinoa, a health expert has revealed the unexpected superfoods you can find at supermarkets for a fraction of the cost. Sydney dietitian and nutritionist Susie Burrell said there are affordable foods that contain just as many health benefits as the latest fads.
One of the most interesting price/health comparisons is coconut oil and olive oil, and the comment that olive is “the only oil we should be
consuming”.

This is where I was going to write about what the gardener with a sophisticated palate should grow this year, in order to eat the best of everything. And then I realised, not quite coincidentally, that I was also thinking about cooking/eating a potato cake made with home-grown spuds, tender home grown shallots, winter-sweet home-grown parsley, home laid eggs and olive oil from a farm in mid-NSW.
Yes, this is a gardening article, but we love that she includes locally-produced olive oil as a “home-grown luxury” – although we’d say “necessity”!

A drought and plant disease in the Mediterranean has accelerated the 30% year on year decline of olive oil production. Olive oil is the latest staple shoppers can expect to see a surge in prices in coming months due to a global shortage of supply.
The alternative to that extra $1.50 per litre for imported olive oil is, of course, buy NZ EVOO.

Spain's olive oil industry has been hard hit by drought and disease, cutting world production. Some olive growers in New Zealand will be thinking seriously about their future, after a wet winter has slashed the New Zealand crop by half.

With the US considering a legal definition of ‘natural’ food, does Europe need one too? It would increase clarity for a complex concept, but defining 'degrees of naturalness’ for origin, ingredients and processing may be better, say the researchers of a review covering 85,000 consumers in 32 countries.

The Economy Ministry has called a halt to the practice of restaurants and tavernas topping up the olive oil bottles on their tables from a source in the kitchen, saying it poses a hygiene risk to customers.
Whether it’s about hygiene or quality, it’s a positive move which is gradually becoming the norm across Europe.

In the last five years, the husband-and-wife team of Yannis Prodromou and Evi Psounou Prodromou have weathered the Greek economic crisis by rebranding their olive tree and olive fruit company, Yanni’s Olive Grove, into an award-winning producer of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO).
There’s some great advice in here for other small producers: "Don't stop believing in yourself and in your products. Always keep trying, regardless of the obstacles."
