The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) met in Washington, D.C., to recognize recent market access achievements for several longstanding issues for both the United States and Peru, including potential expansion of imports of papayas, oversized mangoes, peppers, and citrus. This success is the culmination of many years of hard work between the U.S. and Peru's technical agencies.  

Economy & Trade

The economic growth helps reduce poverty in a country, but redistributive policies are required to protect the most vulnerable sectors and are particularly necessary in the context of economic slowdown affecting the region, pointed out Economy and Finance Minister Alonso Segura.

Peru's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have considerable presence in ConnectAmericas, the First Social Network for Businesses in the Americas, created at initiative of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Poverty Reduction




Poverty reduced from 23.9% (2013) to 22.7% (2014) in Peru, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) announced.
This would mean over 280,000 Peruvians left poverty behind, it added.
Poverty decreased by 1.2 percentage points last year, despite reductions having stagnated in Latin America since 2012, according to reports issued by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Peru can grow at a sustained rate of 7% yearly and reduce its poverty rate by 6 percentage points by 2021, with a per capita income of US$17,709, informed the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).


The Ford Foundation representative for the Andean Region and the Southern Cone, Jean-Paul Lacoste, has highlighted the work conducted by the Peruvian Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) that has led to "positive changes" in the lives of underprivileged Peruvians.

Peruvian President Ollanta Humala Tasso taook part in the opening of thermoelectric plant 'Fenix Power', located in Chilca district of Ca?ete province, south of Lima.


The head of the "Mining Formalization, Illegal Mining Interdiction and Environmental Remediation Matters Unit" Antonio Fernandez, headed joint interdiction operations conducted by the Peruvian Navy and the National Police.
Agriculture


The Lima Orchid (Chloraea undulata) was considered extinct for more than half a century. The flower was recently rediscovered however, thriving in the hills of Asia in Ca?ete, according to El Comercio.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, in collaboration with the National Forest and Wildlife Service (SERFOR), presented the Flora Guide of Lomas de Lima, where in readers can find the rediscovery of the Lima orchid.

Fight Against Drugs


Private-sector business associations expressed their commitment to collaborate with the Peruvian government, in order to eradicate the drug-trafficking mafias infiltrated into the export sector.
 

Defense



 Spanish shipbuilder Construcciones Navales Paulino Freire is set to cut steel in early May on the Peruvian Navy's (Marina de Guerra del Per?, or MGP) new oceanographic survey ship.

The construction contract for the Buque Oceanogr?fico Polar vessel was signed in December 2014. The contract is reported to be valued at almost USD100 million, although Freire declined to comment on this.

The 95-m long steel-hulled vessel has been designed for working in the Antarctic region as well as in Peruvian waters.

Diplomacy



Peru's President Ollanta Humala held private meetings with Ambassadors of the State of Palestine, Walid Ibrahim, and the Russian Federation, Andrey A. Guskov, after receiving their respective credential letters at the Government Palace in Lima.



The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today appointed Ambassador Julio Eduardo Martinetti Macedo as new Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Peru, in replacement of Claudio de La Puente Ribeyro.

 




Gastronomy



Ricardo Rizzo could have started any restaurant, but the veteran of the industry wanted to create a place that both honored and celebrated the food of his native country. And that's what Golden Llama does.

With its Inca Kola and its soccer on all day, the eatery presents authentic Peruvian food in a no frills environment that has already garnered a regular following.

"I want to try my (country's) food and there's no places here," says Ricardo Rizzo, who owns Golden Llama with his brother, Bruno. "Not with the real Peruvian food."

Tourism



In the first part of this article, I told you about the importance of responsible or ethical travel and to choose travel options that actually contribute to and benefit the places that you visit. On my Iquitos visit, I visited two 'responsible' jungle lodges.

The second part of my trip, I spent in "La Chacra". La Chacra, which lovingly means "the farm" in Spanish, is a family owned and operated 50-hectares property in the Peruvian Amazon Basin with a focus on integrating tourism and social work. While La Chacra is only 12 kilometers from Iquitos, it feels like you are in the middle of the rainforest.



Peru will host four stages of the 2016 Dakar Rally, the event organizers confirmed today during the official presentation of the toughest off-road race in the world. 



Cross-border tourism has consolidated in the last years thanks to the strategies put in place, which aim at attracting more tourists from neighboring nations, such as: Ecuador and Chile, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Magali Silva affirmed.

Peru has won a continental medal in synchronized swimming after 17 years, thanks to Thais Yamashiro's performance, who claimed bronze in junior solo at the 2015 South American Junior Championships held in Lima.

Results pointed all pointed fingers at Peru when the University of Chile asked the question, "Who speaks the best Spanish of Latin America?"

On April 23, the Spanish-speaking world celebrates the Day of Language, and today Peru celebrates speaking the best spoken Spanish in all of Latin America.



Just after revealing the news that the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima will be doubling its bike paths to 300 km, and the San Borja, Surco, Miraflores, and Surquillo bike path system is opening, Jes?s Mar?a is joining the bike path rage.
