ATTENTION PARENTS!
The research is clear that children who don't read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect.  Numerous studies indicate that students who don't read or read infrequently during their summer vacation see their reading abilities stagnate or decline. This effect becomes more pronounced as students get older and advance through the school system. The situation for economically disadvantaged students is especially grim: if students from low-income families don't read over the summer, they are much more likely to fall behind their more privileged peers, widening the "achievement gap."

Deschutes Public Library is helping you out by providing an outstanding and fun Summer Reading Program called "Build A Better World". Click on the image to go to the library list for Kids, Teens, Adults, Family and Espanol fun reading programs.

June Art in the Library

Artist Barbara Berry is displaying her artwork in the Community Room. From her website ' Barbara Berry Art', Barbara describes her inspiration:

"From the rising sunlight reaching across the woodland streams in Pennsylvania to the late afternoon light stretching over the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming, the ever-changing beauty of our fragile home is my inspiration. I consider each render-whether it be a landscape or the character and colors in a loved one's face an immeasurable privilege, and my ambition is to share my experiments with pastels and oil paints-to prompt a nostalgic memory or to inspire another to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us."

Paul Bennett has several prints of his artwork over the last few years in the Computer Room. You can find Paul's art at Sisters Art and Gallery on Hood Ave.

Since the age of nine Paul wanted to be an artist. "I suppose it's because children are attracted to powerful things and art always struck me as being very powerful. I had prints of paintings by Van Gogh all over my room when I was in middle school. I don't know where I got them - probably from a calendar - but I found them inspiring."

In July, there will be a special exhibit of the MIX Group from Portland displaying some of their small art quilts in the Community Room. Their theme this year is Urban PDX. Artist, Dinah Bond, will be exhibiting her painting in the Computer Room in July.
