On the practical side of things, learn the  latest on Medicare on Thursday, April 7th at 6:00 p.m. Then learn how to  maximize your Social Security benefits on Saturday, April 23rd, at 3:00 p.m. 

If you  are an opera  fan, attend the L.A. Opera Talk on Thursday, April 14th, at 6:30 p.m. Learn all about Puccini’s beloved masterpiece La Boheme, and the loves and aspirations of struggling artists. The opera will begin its run at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in May.  

Book  lovers will enjoy Maggie Anton’s talk on Monday, March 18th, at 6:00 p.m. Maggie Anton is best known for her fiction, but this time she presents her new nonfiction book “50 Shades of Talmud: What the First Rabbis Had to Say about You-Know-What.” Discover a new perspective on what the ancient Jewish sages had to say about our most intimate relationships.

Made in LA is a new cultural series highlighting music, art, dance and theater from local entertainers, featuring free performances at libraries throughout the city from March 13 - June 30, 2016.  Westwood will host the ever-popular Arnie Weiss who will be performing Stories by Marvin Chernoff on 4/21 at 6:30 p.m.

On April 27 at 6:30 p.m., certified hypnotherapist Maleya Tran will talk about why some people suffer from anxiety at any level, whether it is public speaking, social or driving anxieties, specific phobias, or just generalized anxiety. In this workshop, you will learn anxiety basics, the physiology of your body/mind when anxiety occurs, and the techniques and tools to help free yourself of this pattern (and why breathing techniques do not always work!).

TeenScape
Teen Librarian Elizabeth Calla 

Teens, we are inviting you  to come on April 27th at 4 p.m. for a special STEAM stop motion animation program!  Science, technology, engineering, art and math come together in this one hour program for teens and tweens ages 8-18. Use iPads we provide to create your own animated video.  Upload it to the librarian’s youtube channel and share your video with friends, family and the world! Space is limited to 10, please sign up at the info desk.

For potential teen volunteers who couldn’t make it to our last program, please join us April 21st at 4 p.m. for an orientation and assessment to become a library volunteer.  Teens ages 14-19 can sign up to start earning community service hours.  Please email Elisabeth, the young adult librarian, with any questions: [email protected]

Hello April! Here’s what we have planned for the Westwood kids this month:

Let’s get crafty! Create your very own DIY yarn doll, bookmark or more on Tuesday, April 5th at 4 p.m. Bring your great ideas and let’s make something fun together!

Our Building Bricks Club will meet on Thursday, April 14th at 4 p.m. Bring your imagination and let’s build something together with the branch’s LEGO collection!

For all our young strategists we’re happy to once again welcome chess expert Brian Glover who will introduce the classic game on Saturday, April 16th at 11 a.m.

Hooray for science! Join us to create your own Balloon Powered Car on Tuesday, April 19th at 4 p.m. What design will be the best? How fast can your car go? Bring your inquiring mind and let’s build something fun together! 

And as always we’ll have our baby and toddler storytime sessions! On Wednesdays April 13, 20, and 27 we’ll have a baby storytime for ages 0-18 months at 10:30 a.m. and a toddler storytime for ages 18 months+ at 11:15 a.m.

Buy a Bookplate!

Are you looking for a birthday, bar mitzvah or other gift for someone special?  Perhaps you want to honor a special event or birthday, or you just want people to know that you support  Westwood Library .   If so, a donation of $25 to Friends of Westwood Library will put a  BOOKPLATE  inside a newly purchased book for the branch.  The bookplate can be dedicated in your name, or it can be dedicated "in honor of" or "in memory of" someone special.  

  Click here  and you will be able to purchase a bookplate online.  Please make sure to follow the directions for a bookplate donation on the website.  If you prefer, you can pick up a bookplate donation envelope at the branch and leave it with the libra rians or  mail it in later.
