PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

The hectic Holiday Season is now a thing of the past!  The FOAL Board hopes you all had a wonderful time and will be starting the New Year refreshed and with, perhaps, a resolution to see what the Library can offer you this year!

We thank Board Member, Carol Gobler, for arranging a concert by the Central Coast Children's Choir.  This occurred just before Thanksgiving - and was warmly received by patrons and staff in the Library that day.  Our thanks, also, to Sweet Grace Cookie Co. for providing the wonderful cookies, and to our board members who provided warm apple cider and supervision.

We continue to provide ECHO and RISE with reading materials for their clients, especially magazines.  Both organizations love to receive magazines from us because this type of reading material is easy for their clients to read at leisure - and take with them if they need to.  Don't forget - we accept magazine and book donations at the Bookstore for future sale and distribution to local non-profit organizations.

You will find many items throughout this Newsletter about some of the wonderful events taking place at the Library during the next couple of months.  The "Experiment At Your Library" programs are innovative and we hope you and your family will be able to participate.  We had a successful Book Sale in the Library Lobby on "Black Saturday" and we are pleased to hold another one in February.

There are several County-wide services now available within the Library System.  Did you know you could use SLO Makerspace to work on projects, take classes and connect with local people and resources?  The SLO Library and SLO MakerSpace have formed a partnership to offer fee access to library cardholders to their location at 81 Higuera Street, #160 in SLO.  Just take your library card to check in - ages 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult - and the hours are Tues-Fro 4pm-7pm and Saturday 10am-1pm

Another service now provided to Library patrons is the Mi-Fi hotspot devices.  These devices can be borrowed from our Atascadero Library in the same way as other materials.  The devices can be borrowed for 7 days - overdue hotspots will have internet access deactivated after their due date.   Our Library staff will be more than happy to explain the process in more detail with you.

The Cuesta College 2017 Book Of The Year is "THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS".  This event will take place on Wednesday April 12, 2017 from 5:00-7:00pm at Cuesta's Porforming Arts Center, SLO Campus.  Tickets will be available February 1, 2017.

We'd love to hear from you about the events and programs already slated for the beginning of 2017 - and especially if there are topics you would like the Library to consider for future programs.

Warmest Regards,

Linda Zirk, President, Friends of the Atascadero Library

LIBRARY ART NEWS

Submitted by
Eileen O'Grady

Did you know that the Atascadero Library offers rotating art exhibits in the adult area of the library? Every two months, exhibits change to feature a selected artist or a thematic display that includes the work of several artists.  All are welcome to attend bimonthly art receptions at the library to meet the artists.

The wonderful work of Atascadero photographer Cheryl Strahl is being exhibited through the end of January.  Strahl's award-winning images depict people and cultures from many countries around the world. A retired engineer, Strahl's passion has moved from software to photography. She finds inspiration in landscapes and people, and her work has been recognized locally and nationally. Come in and enjoy her "The People of the World" exhibit.

In February and March the library will host an exhibit that features the work of Atascadero High School students.  A reception is planned for Thursday, February 9, from 5:30-7 p.m.  All are invited to attend the reception at the library and meet the students whose art will be displayed.

LIBRARY BOOKSTORE UPDATE

Submitted by
Alice Rew & Sharon Turner

Our November Black Saturday book sale was a hit! Customers were lined up before we opened. Even with rainy weather folks were eager to pour over the offerings at the amazing 50% off our regular prices.  This was our second sale at our new location and was very well received by the community.
Look for our next sale Saturday, February 11th, 2017 from 10:00 am - 4 pm. Come do your Valentine's Day shopping! Join the fun and support FOAL and our Library.

This last month we were also very fortunate to have had a very generous donation of new leather bound books published by Easton Press. Plus, a collection of the Folio Society, and  a number of other series of  high quality given to us . These make wonderful gifts for any occasion, or a nice treat for yourself.

Although totals are not in yet for December, so far we have recorded over $1300.00 already for the month. If only we could fully staff the bookstore with volunteers, just think of how much we could raise for new books and library programs!   Thanks so much to those who have given of their time to staff the store this past year, as well as donated books, and shopped. If you would like to volunteer, have books to  donate, or have questions, please contact Alice Rew at either (805)466-2230 or arew@charter.net.

With your continued support we can make 2017 a banner year!
