January, 2017 - In This Issue:
From the Desk of Our Executive Director
At the close of every year my family and I spend some time focusing on a word to concentrate on in the upcoming year. Instead of a traditional new year's resolution, we use this word to guide us through work, school, our relationships, and choices we make along the way. This year, my word is "faith" - faith in a spiritual sense as well as faith that those things out of our control turn out as they should. At this time of uncertainty personally with my oldest daughter off to college in the fall, professionally with building relationships with new leadership  at our sister agencies and an uncertain state budget,  and with  a new administration at the helm of our federal government whose policies will trickle down to many aspects of our lives,  I must have faith - more now than ever - that things will work out. That families who rely on our services to find and afford child care will continue to be able to do so. And that 4Cs, my loved ones, and families in our community will continue to thrive.
As I welcome 2017 with faith, what will you focus on this year? Perhaps a new year's resolution, a word to guide you, or completing a personal or professional goal. Whatever the new year brings, I hope that 2017 is a healthy and happy one!

Be Well,

Renee S. Herzfeld

Update: Child Care Staff and Volunteer Immunizations
Message for License Child Care Directors and Staff

In December, 2016, the California Department of Education (CDE), Early Education and Support Division (EESD) released a management bulletin updating licensed child care programs with updates to the staff and volunteer immunization requirements set forth on September, 2016. The updates include clarification on who in the child care facility must be immunized, what immunizations are required, and by when. If you work at, own, or volunteer at a licensed child care facility (child care center or family child care home), we strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with the CDSS' Immunization and Tuberculosis Requirements Tool for Licensed Child Care Facilities. You can also read the entire legislation here or give the California Department of Education's Early Education and Support Division's staff a call at (916) 322-6233.
New Car Seat Law Now in Effect
Current California Law Updated for Transportation of Children Under 2

As of January 1, 2017, California Law requires all children under two years of age to ride in a rear-facing car seat. The only exception to this new law if the child weighs more than 40 pounds or is 40 inches tall or taller. Current law also mandates that;
- children under 8 sit in the backseat in a car seat or booster seat
- children who are 8-years old or 4'9" may use the car's seat belt if it fits properly, otherwise they must be in a booster or car seat
For more information about the new law and current laws, see California Highway Patrol's website (also has information on child car seat safety inspections), or California Department of Public Health's handouts in English and Spanish.
**Remember that all children under 13 are safest in the back seat of a vehicle.
4Cs "Asthma-Friendly" Child Care Environments Conference
A Special Free Mini Conference for Child Care Providers in the Tri-Valley
Saturday, March 25, 2017, 8:30-1:30, San Ramon

Asthma is on the rise among children and adults in the Tri-Valley area. Since many children spend a portion of their day in child care settings, it is vitally important that these environments are healthy and free of asthma triggers.
Child care providers are invited to attend our mini-conference and receive training, resources and support to establish "asthma-friendly" policies, focusing on prevention. Learn what asthma triggers may be present in or around your child care facility or home and take steps to eliminate or reduce them.
Removing asthma triggers not only helps the children and adults with asthma, but creates a HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT for EVERYONE.
