A Bill of Rights for Refugees and Host Countries

In last Saturday's Civitas 2017 Challenge Model United Nations, fifty St. Louis area high school students dived into the international refugee crisis and created something that apparently no one has previously considered: a Bill of rights for refugees, and an accompanying Bill of Rights for host countries.

The students, from 17 local high schools, had previously selected countries to represent, as delegates to a Model UN program run by Civitas, a St. Louis-based non-profit that promotes active citizenship for teenagers. Participants signed up for this exercise not to win trophies or to get extra credit for a class assignment, but because, they attested at the end of the session, they are genuinely interested in world issues and want to be part of the solution. You know a 16-year-old is taking this seriously when he/she shows up at 8:30 am on a Saturday to take on the challenge.

Thanks to all; terrific job. Special thanks to Gloria who conceived of the program and put it together.

A few spaces remain for this Saturday's
 RenegadeSTL Bus Tour

Continuing with the theme of immigration, Civitas is h
osting a bus tour of the City of St. Louis this Saturday which will focus on local immigration patterns. Working with RenegadeSTL, we will board a bus at the Civitas office (map) at 9:00 AM and return at 1:00 PM.  While many of us are aware of the recent immigration of many Bosnians to St. Louis, like all American cities, St. Louis was built on immigration. People arrive, settle, move, resettle and the pattern continues. On this tour we will focus on the City of St. Louis. In a subsequent trip, we will concentrate on St. Louis County.

The deadline for registration is at 9:00 PM today (Tuesday, Feb. 28). In addition to registering, students must bring a sack lunch and also bring a completed permission form signed by a parent.

The easiest way to register is to click here.

TNT - Tuesday Night Talk -- with pizza

One week from tonight, March 7, Civitas will have its next open and free-wheeling discussion. It's really an after-school event, running from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. We will be providing pizza and beverages; you can give us your choice for pizza toppings on the sign-up form.

So far, suggested topics for the forum are:
  • The presidency and mental health
  • Reproductive rights, women's health, choice, life
  • Legal differences between public and private schools
  • Intersectional Feminism

The event is at Civitas (map) and students can sign up by clicking here.
