To quote my father - "there is nothing sexy about sharing a bathroom, Samantha". This is basically my dad's only real relationship advice he will share and he shares it with whoever will listen. As I have gotten older, I understand this more and more. Relationships are great, but there are many practical things about day to day life that are not nearly as fun as the fun stuff! Vacations, parties and gifts are great, but what do you do the other 90% of the time? You simply LIVE.
In good times and bad, all people (relationships or not) need practical financial skills to thrive. And when ME becomes WE (and eventually US if kids come along), things get complicated and your financial lives become more intertwined. The more you are on the same page with your partner in crime the better. One partner can't simply turn a blind eye to money and let the other manage it (we ALL know someone who knows someone who did not have this situation work out! It rarely does.).
So, as the winter is here (in CT!) and the holidays are over and things have calmed down, use this month to have "the talk" with your partner. Single? great! Have a financial talk with yourself.
The important thing is to get on the same page!!
