March 2014
Ronald McDonald House Houston
Welcome!
From Leslie's Desk
Leslie Bourne, Executive Director

Dear Friends,

The year is off to a great start at RMH Houston! We are in high gear preparing for many exciting opportunities on the horizon in 2014, including the release of our book, Mogie: The heart of the house, on June 10. Before we get too far into 2014 however, I'd like to share with you all that we were able to accomplish in 2013:

Each of our programs had an incredible year. Click here to read all the details.

Hundreds of volunteers came together throughout the year to make our programs possible: 593 shift volunteers donated 26,486 hours with a financial value of $586,400 in potential labor cost savings.

THANK YOU everyone who helped make 2013 such an outstanding year, whether by sharing your time, talent or treasure! We look forward to another great year with you joining us on this journey to make Ronald McDonald House Houston a very special home away from home!

FirstGiving
Ronald McDonald House Houston has many great options for anyone looking to get involved: you can volunteer individually or with a group, donate items from our Wish List, attend one of our special events and many more ways to join our family.

Now we're adding an easy way for you to become a fundraiser for our House: FirstGiving!

FirstGiving is a unique website that allows individuals, companies or organizations to host a fundraiser on behalf of a non-profit. This is fun way for you to spread the word about the House that Love Built and get your friends and family involved. You could even make it a competition between friends, or collect donations in lieu of birthday gifts, as some of our past supporters have done.

To get started, visit www.firstgiving.com/rmhhouston and click on the green "Start Fundraising" button.

Let's see how much we can raise to continue to continue to make RMH Houston a wonderful
home away from home! Thanks for all your support!

Family News
Celia

Five year old Celia and her family came to RMH Houston all the way from Calgary, Canada for proton therapy treatment for Celia's rare brain tumor. While they were here, the family became friends with the other families and RMH volunteers and staff, and found a support network to help them through the journey that comes along with struggling with a childhood illness.

One person in particular made a big impact on Celia. Meet Kara Moline, President-elect of our young professional volunteer group, Young Friends, and hear how Celia and the House have touched her life.

The experience of volunteering with Ronald McDonald House Houston reaffirmed something that I knew intellectually, but somehow along the way had forgotten to truly appreciate until I met Celia and her family. She has touched my heart, made me smile and given me many things to reflect upon.

That week I planned to present Celia with a pink cowgirl hat. I arrived at Ronald McDonald House Houston (cowgirl hat in tow) along with a Hello Kitty coloring book. For the next two hours, Celia and a few other kids staying at the House played and colored with me. We had the best time laughing, coloring and talking about her brother, Tanner, who was just about to turn three. I will always be grateful for the spirit of life Celia and the other kids gave me from our coloring adventure.
