Haverim,

Please know that we will have a slightly amended order of service tomorrow morning in order to allow more time for study and discussion of our topic "Why Pray? : Kevah (fixed prayer) and Kavannah (Prayer from the heart)."
See the box below for more information about this exploration of prayer over 4 Shabbatot this spring.

Here is a brief outline for tomorrow:

9:30-9:40 am - Abbreviated preliminary service
9:40-10:00 am - Review of sources on the meaning of prayer
10:00-11:25 am - Regular Shacharit service (no repetition of Amidah), Torah service, Musaf
11:15-11:50 am - Discussion on "Why Pray?"
11:50 am - 12:05 pm - Closing prayers, greetings and announcements

I strongly encourage everyone to arrive by 9:45 am, at the latest, in order to get the most out of this important study and discussion (yes, I know that is asking for a lot from some of you!). You will receive a packet of sources when you arrive. In order to conserve paper, we are asking that people share.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Ben Shull

Why Pray?  Join us for an exploration of prayer in the Jewish tradition, and how we can relate to that tradition today.
Ever wonder:
  • Why we recite the prayers we say at Shabbat services and daily minyans?
  • Who we are talking to?
  • Why our discussion is mainly in Hebrew and Aramaic?
  • What other people see in prayer-from fellow congregants to Judaism's greatest thinkers?
  • Why we come to synagogue to pray together?
Today we dedicate the first of four Shabbatot this spring to discussing these questions. Each Shabbat Rabbi Shull will provide us with Jewish sources on a key theme of the prayer experience. We invite you to consider this material during the service and to use it to help understand what you are saying, reading and seeing around you. Our service will feature a discussion in place of a Dvar Torah. Look for upcoming   Why Pray ? Shabbatot on  April 16 May 21 , and  June 18 .
