Chuck Cary's Weekly Email for September 23, 2018
Members and Friends of First Church,
I attended a group made up of Presbyterian Clergy on Thursday last. The conversation was supposed to be about a book by Brian McLaren entitled: The Great Spiritual Migration: How the World's Largest Religion is Seeking a Better Way to Be Christian. As usual the conversation quickly shifted from the book's subject matter to what's happening in our own churches. I am not surprised. Most pastors need an outlet for their joys and concerns. The irony ....we could have spent the entire day, but needed to move on. Not just Presbyterian pastors, we all need such outlets and support. Such is the mission of the church. I believe FPC takes seriously everyone's joys and concerns. Thank God.

The first Sunday of Autumn centers on a text from the Epistle of James, Chapter 3:13-18. The sermon title is "In Defense of Being Gentle". Rousing, inspirational hymns include "Come Christians Join to Sing", "Lord, I Want To Be a Christian", and "We Have Heard the Joyful Sound". The Bell choir will offer a beautiful introit while the chancel choir will sing, "Send Us Lord to Every Nation". It is also Evangelism Sunday according to the Presbyterian Planning Calendar. Alas, every Sunday is Evangelism Sunday, if we manage to spread the Good News of the Gospel. Regular Sunday worship takes an hour. Nothing is more important. See you here!

Kudos to the leaders of Thursday's Movie Night which welcomed 20 friends to the Rec Room. Perhaps you have a suggestion for future movies. Ill never forget the joy on the face of the star of Steven King's "The Green Mile" as he watched his first flick, a scene of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing cheek to cheek to the tune of "Heaven".

An adult class happens at 9;00 in the Founder's Room. The subject is "Forgiveness and Reconciliation". We look at Scripture, consider contemporary illustrations, and suggest ways to uphold this practice. This week we focus on the need to forgive ourselves as part of the cycle or dynamic of reconciliation. Newcomers always welcome.

Announcements to be aware of include the Deacon's Auction for November 3, The Christmas Spectacular now on for 12/27. Operation Christmas Child, Ladies Lunch Bunch Wednesday September 26th at Noon, Octoberfest October 6 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Presbyterian Women's Bake Sale on October 13th from 9:00 til ?, and Youth Group Update. Keep your worship bulletin and take part. Also, scan the prayer concerns and lift those named in your daily prayers of intercession.

The boards of the church enjoyed productive meetings in September. Great attendance and spirited discussions could be heard whether it was the Deacons, the Trustees at the home of Paul and Kathie Rogers, or the session last Wednesday. Hats off to officers who give of their time and energy.

Prayer for the Day:Almighty and everlasting God, you created the heavens and the earth, and humanity in your image. Teach us to discern your hand in all your works and to serve you with reverence and thanksgiving; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

See you in church!!
