Please join us next weekend, October 8-9, for the Showcase of Miniatures, one of the top three miniature shows in the nation.

Professional miniaturists from across the U.S. and around the world vie to be among the 100 invited vendors. Their meticulously crafted merchandise is amazing. You'll find lots to do, from examining the exquisite exhibits to participating in the silent auction, raffle, and free Sunday class. Youngsters have fun with kids' classes, a free workshop, and a special sales table.

Invite a friend, treat a grandchild, make a date with your mate - or enjoy
our annual fundraiser all by yourself! Details are here.

Several ways to save money on prescription medications are suggested in the video concluding an article on drug costs.

Is it okay to drink lots of sparkling water?

Contrary to some preliminary research, a large, new study indicates breathing problems in kids with asthma are not exacerbated by acetaminophen.

Take a chance on helping others have longer, more productive lives: register as an organ donor! Most adults, including seniors, are eligible.

"Symptom checker" websites and apps often provide unhelpful advice or fail to suggest correct diagnoses.

Preventing & Managing Arthritis

Healthful lifestyle choices during your adult years can lower your odds of developing osteoarthritis. The same article includes self-care measures to help you control pain and maintain function if you already have this extremely common joint condition.

Sleep Tight!

If you travel across time zones, these tips can help you manage jet lag.

Melatonin won't cure many sleep problems, but it does appear to be helpful for some people and in some situations. Learn how to use melatonin to best effect.

Do you suspect you'd sleep better with a new bed? Consumer Reports has a mattress shopping guide, plus advice regarding several oft-promoted features.

Sepsis2016-10
What is sepsis?

Affecting roughly two million Americans per year and killing many thousands, sepsis is a rapidly-progressing and overwhelming response to infection. Young children and seniors are most commonly affected, but all ages are vulnerable. Despite its impact, the disease is little known and easily mistaken for another condition; both patients and doctors often fail to recognize its symptoms as signs of a critical emergency.

Prompt diagnosis is critical to successful treatment. You should immediately see a health care professional and specifically ask if the diagnosis could be sepsis if signs of an infection (for example, diarrhea, vomiting, or sore throat) occur with any of these symptoms -
  • Shivering, fever, or feeling very cold
  • Extreme pain or discomfort
  • Clammy or sweaty skin
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Shortness of breath
  • High heart rate
DepressionTreatments2016-10
Treatments for Depression

A recent review compared the effectiveness of antidepressant medications in treating depression with talk therapies, exercise, acupuncture, and nutritional supplements. The results are presented for lay people and professionals.
